ITNS Extends Its Sympathies to Italy

ITNS
"ITNS wishes to extend its deepest sympathies to the victims of the massive earthquake that caused such death and destruction in the towns of Amitrice and Accumoli, in central Italy. Over the years, ITNS has established a strong, collaborative relationship with Italian transplant nurses: those in Palermo on the island of Sicily at the ISMETT (UPMC-Italy) facility and especially our relationship with Dr. Paolo De Simone, MD PhD, SISQT President (Italian Society for Safety and Quality in Transplantation), located in Pisa. With the first initial quake and then the continued aftershocks, we are acutely reminded how fragile life can be and how our lives can change in an instant. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our Italian transplant colleagues and all of the victims of the earthquake."

Hospitals across the United States are throwing away less-than-perfect organs and denying the sickest people lifesaving transplants out of fear that poor surgical outcomes will result in a federal crackdown.
As a result, thousands of patients are losing the chance at surgeries that could significantly prolong their lives, and the altruism of organ donation is being wasted.

The searing debate over forced organ extraction is not new. For about 15 years it has raged, between the Chinese government and its supporters and Falun Gong practitioners and investigators. But as hundreds of the world's leading transplant surgeons, including from China, gathered at the Transplantation Society's biennial meeting in Hong Kong this week and last, the issue seemed more explosive than ever — perhaps because the meeting was on Chinese soil for the first time, bringing the debate closer to home.

CMS issued a proposal in the Federal Register that would increase Medicare patients' access to services by permitting NPs and PAs to provide home care.
The proposal would revise the Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, lifting a ban on PAs and NPs that keeps them from providing in-home care to Medicare patients. The administration hopes expanding the provider base will make PACE "more operationally feasible and cost-effective, particularly in rural areas or areas where labor costs may be high," the proposed rule reads.

Organ transplants, while majestic when successful, come with many health hazards — the most glaring being sudden or eventual organ rejection.
An international team of researchers, led by experts from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, recently published a study in the journal Nature Communications that could offer insight into treating or preventing rejection.

For recipients of an organ transplant, smoking is even more dangerous than for the rest of the population, a recent analysis shows. Transplant patients must remain on immunosuppressive medication for life to keep their bodies from rejecting the organ, which is why they already have an increased risk of cancer, infections and heart disease, researchers write in the journal Transplantation.

Human trafficking, also called modern
slavery, happens worldwide — and the United States
is no exception. Within our borders, thousands of foreign
nationals and U.S. citizens, many of them children,
are forced or coerced into sex work or various
forms of labor every year. Nurses and other healthcare providers who encounter victims of trafficking
often don’t realize it, and opportunities to intervene
are lost. Although no one sign can demonstrate with
certainty when someone is being trafficked, there are
several indicators that clinicians should know. This
article provides an overview of human trafficking,
describes how to recognize signs that a person is
being trafficked and how to safely intervene, and
offers an extensive resource list.

After 22-year-old Girish from Pune lost both his kidneys to diabetes, hardly did he know he would be able to survive without insulin injections and dialysis on a daily basis. The 21st-century healthcare and nursing ecosystems are complex, consistently impacted by the shifting sands of economics, politics and other factors. Nurse leaders cannot afford to remain complacent in this climate, and they need their employers' support to manifest their visions in times that call for frequent change and innovation. From the emergence of ICD-10 to changes in the evidence base for many aspects of nursing practice, complacency is a setup for falling behind the times.
