Breast cancer is an important cancer among solid organ transplant recipients. While the incidence of breast cancer in solid organ transplant recipients is comparable to the age-matched general population, the outcomes are generally poor. Interventions such as cancer screening that preclude the development of late-stage disease through early detection are not well studied, and clinical practice guidelines for cancer screening rely solely on recommendations from the general population.

The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) guidelines advise against inappropriate weight match (IWM) for heart transplant, defined as donor weight <70% of recipient’s weight. Few studies have explored in detail this size-matching recommendation, especially with regard to body mass index (BMI) and gender matching. We aimed to determine whether any difference could be observed between size-matching in obese and non-obese recipients with regard to mortality after cardiac transplantation.

Liver transplantation is the gold standard for treating early hepatocellular cancers. Because of the lack of donors, this option is, however, available to a limited degree only. Curative liver resection is an alternative in this setting. Markus B. Schoenberg, Julian N. Bucher, and coauthors investigated whether liver resection (LR) can yield results that are comparable to those of liver transplantation (LT).

Antiviral therapy against hepatitis C (HCV) infection has proved to be safe and efficacious in patients with cirrhosis awaiting liver transplantation (LT). However, the information regarding the clinical impact of viral eradication on the waiting list is still limited. The aim of the study was to investigate the probability of delisting in patients who underwent antiviral therapy and the clinical outcomes delisted patients.

Ovarian tissue preservation, subsequent transplantation and maintenance of reproductive potential may be feasible for women with breast cancer who have BRCA mutations, according to a retrospective analysis presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology Congress.
“This is great news for all of the people working in this field, and we’re happy to report a full-term pregnancy and birth in a BRCA-mutated patient who received ovarian tissue cryopreservation,” Matteo Lambertini, MD, medical oncologist at Institut Jules Bordet in Brussels, told HemOnc Today.

Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) is a major cause of early morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation. Statins reduce the risk of chronic rejection after lung transplantation, but their effects on PGD are unknown. We hypothesized that perioperative statin therapy decreases the risk for PGD after lung transplantation.

Researchers in Germany have demonstrated that hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplants can be improved by treatments that temporarily prevent the stem cells from dying. The approach, which is described in a paper to be published Sept. 7 in The Journal of Experimental Medicine, could allow those in need of such transplants, including leukemia and lymphoma patients, to be treated with fewer donor stem cells while limiting potential adverse side effects.

The current opioid epidemic in the U.S. has unfortunately led to a marked increase in opioid-related deaths. It is a sad fact that such deaths result in much-needed relief for organ shortages around the country. However, it is not that simple, says Stephen O. Pastan, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. “Some of these people die with a needle in their arm and it is often harder to place these donors.”
