Delayed kidney transplantation in combined liver-kidney transplantation, compared with the simultaneous approach, had better survival rates and overall outcomes, especially among cases with a lower kidney donor profile index, researchers reported in a recently published study.
“It is well known that peri-operative kidney dysfunction is a well-established risk factor for recipient mortality in patients undergoing [liver transplantation],” Burcin Ekser, MD, PhD, from the Indiana University School of Medicine, and colleagues wrote.

Kidney Allocation System (KAS) was enacted in 2014 to improve graft utility, while facilitating transplantation of highly-sensitized patients and preserving pediatric access to high-quality kidneys. Central to this system is the Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI), a metric intended to predict transplant outcomes based on donor characteristics but derived using only adult donors. We posited that KAS had inadvertently altered the profile and quantity of kidneys made available to pediatric recipients.

One of the most persistent challenges in health care is filling the growing need for nurses, especially in certain specialties.
Colorado, for one, is projected to have a deficit of about 17,000 registered and licensed practical nurses by 2025, according to the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis. To meet that need, hospitals and nursing schools have been working together to bolster the pool of nurses. One example in Colorado Springs is a partnership involving UCHealth Memorial Hospital, Pikes Peak Community College and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.

Ritual circumcision complicated by gangrene is a leading cause of penile loss in young men in South Africa. This deeply rooted cultural tradition is unlikely to be abolished. Conventional reconstructive techniques using free vascularised tissue flaps with penile implants are undesirable in this often socioeconomically challenged group because donor site morbidity can hinder manual labour and vigorous sexual activity might lead to penile implant extrusion.
