This grant may be used to support research projects, a systematic review of the literature, a meta-analysis, a quality improvement initiative or a program evaluation project. In Scotland last year, 550 people were waiting for an organ with 350 transplants carried out. Dr Iain MacLeod, head of intensive care and clinical lead for organ donation transplant at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, said: “New science and technology allows us to look at how we can make every organ count and maximize the number of organs we can use.
We are now able to use organs that would never previously have been considered, such as people who are older or who have had other illnesses."

The Rio Grande Valley’s only kidney transplant center will no longer perform operations. CHANNNEL 5 NEWS reported that the center, run by McAllen Medical, voluntarily placed its program on inactive status until further notice. More than 200 candidates are on McAllen Medical Center’s kidney transplant waiting list. They are being notified about the program’s closure. The hospital is also breaking the news to transplant recipients who are receiving follow-up care.

Patients waiting for a lung transplant can suffer from depression, anxiety, and stress — which can potentially affect transplant outcome — but a previous diagnosis of a mood disorder is not predictive of who is at risk, new research suggests.

Broader geographic sharing of pediatric donor lungs could result in twice as many lung transplants for young patients in the U.S., according to a study published in the American Journal of Transplantation.
Maryam Valapour, M.D., senior lung investigator for the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) and director of Lung Transplant Outcomes at Cleveland Clinic, is the senior author. The SRTR is the organization responsible for analyzing U.S. transplant data.

When people think of George Washington University Hospitals, officials want them to think kidneys. More specifically, they want patients to think of the hospital as the place to go to fix the most complex of medical conditions.
