Ethical dilemmas surround those willing to sell, buy kidneys on black market

There's no denying that there is a shortage of organ donations in the U.S. Government estimates show 18 people die each day waiting for a transplant, and every 10 minutes someone is added to the transplant list.
The need for kidneys is especially high. As of Oct. 25, 98,463 people were waiting for a new kidney in the U.S., the most requested organ by far. Thus far this year, only 9,708 kidney transplants have been completed.
Improved brain injury survival furthers organ shortage

More hospital patients are surviving traumatic brain injuries — which is good news, except for those waiting on donated organs for transplants. Improved survival rates have resulted in fewer transplant organs being available, Canadian researchers found.
A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, examined the recovery outcomes of 2,788 adult patients admitted to regional intensive care units in Alberta, Canada, over a 10.5 year period.

China to end use of prisoners' organs for transplants in mid-2014

China, the only country that still systematically takes organs from executed prisoners for use in transplant operations, plans to end the controversial practice by the middle of next year, a senior official said.
Stalling organ rejection with atorvastatin

 A recent research paper in The Journal of Experimental Medicine discussed the framework of hypotheses being developed on the possible effects of statins on genes, leading to organ rejection after transplantation. This placed the spotlight on one of the most prescribed drugs in the world — atorvastatin, more commonly known as Lipitor. The drug resulted in longer survival for mice who had undergone transplantation compared to mice who did not receive treatment.

The liver's ability to naturally regenerate makes it an ideal match for bioprinting — the field of using 3-D-printing technology to print living cells layer by layer with computer-guided precision. Organovo, a San Diego-based startup, sees the liver as a solid stepping-stone for perfecting the science of building human organs in the lab.
Organ donors, transplants on increase

The number of organ donors has increased by more than 40 per cent in the past four years, with the nation's transplant authority reporting a rise in family consent for donations. The Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority noted "significant increases" in donations and transplants, with the number of deceased organ donors rising from 247 to 354 between 2009 and 2012.
