Initiating rapid withdrawal from steroids following kidney transplant cuts down on the risk of post-transplant diabetes in immunologically low-risk patients, a researcher said. In a study of 587 kidney transplant patients, two groups of patients who underwent rapid steroid withdrawal experienced post-transplant diabetes rates of 24 percent and 23 percent compared with 39 percent in a control group, said Christian Hugo, MD, of University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden, in Germany, at the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week.

The cost of liver transplant will be reduced by at least Rs 5 lakh if organ donation takes place in Bhopal, according to experts.
"UW solution," the cold storage fluid in which liver is preserved costs about Rs 3 lakh while cold storage of kidney costs around Rs 1,000. If the donated liver is not transported from Indore to Bhopal, the cost will be reduced by Rs 5 lakh or more, said Siddhanta Red Cross Super Speciality Hospital (SRC) medical director Dr Subodh Varshney.

A new method which doubles the usual time donor lungs can remain outside the body can benefit patients, staff and allow retrieval of donor lungs across greater geographical areas, says a study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.
After retrieval, donor lungs are usually bathed in an organ-preserving solution, inflated with oxygen and kept on ice less than eight hours. If too much time passes before the organ can be transplanted, the organ may become too damaged to be used. The maximum acceptable time in most centers has been 6 to 8 hours.
