Is 'follow the leader' leading associations astray?
The Demand Perspective    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Having members as leaders does not make an association "member-driven." At least not in the way most associations think it does. In fact, the practice of allowing a small group of atypical members to "drive" the association is helping to drive many organizations toward irrelevance and decline. More

According to a report compiled annually by the American Association of Fundraising, in 2010 Americans gave a staggering $290 billion to their favorite causes. Despite the tough economic conditions faced by many, total giving was up 3.8 percent from 2009. More

Deirdre Reid, writer for association content, writes: "Over the last four years, I've learned a lot about social media and can usually distinguish sound advice from attention-seeking blather. But what happens when reliable sources provide conflicting advice? Take the topic of social media engagement at nights and during the weekend. It has been shown that organizations that post outside of business hours have 20 percent higher engagement rates on Facebook than organizations that do not post outside of traditional business hours." New Form 990, same old behavior
Acronym    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Revenue Service's revisions to Form 990. For the first time, nonprofits were asked to disclose whether they had policies in place regarding conflicts of interest on boards, whistleblowers and document retention. The ASAE Foundation has been collecting data from Form 990 for the past few years, and it's now clear that, however anxious those questions made associations at the time, they haven't produced any substantive overall behavioral change in the industry.
