LOCATOR
Does my current customer or inventory management system support my marketing needs? At Locator Services we get asked this question all the time. If you are using an in-house or legacy system the answer is probably "No." One of the many advantages of our Locator Customer & Inventory Management System™ is the ability to manage all of your advertising directly from the system itself. With the simple click of a mouse you can make sure your inventory data is fed directly to your website, to LocatorOnline.com, or any other website you designate for advertising. If you're worried about converting your data don't be. Simply export your customer and inventory data to us and let Locator import it into your CIMS system prior to deployment. Don't let historical notes about your customer and inventory hold you back. In most cases your IT personnel should be able to extract all of your data so that we can import your notes and quotes along with the customer contact and inventory information. If for some reason they can't we can probably still populate the customer and inventory information and run parallel for a year while the "history" rewrites itself with updated customer notes and more recent quotes. After 6 months or so the history from your old system has become just that, history, and the need to run parallel will no longer be necessary.
You owe it to your business to take the necessary steps this summer and make sure you have a cutting edge system that supports your marketing efforts as much as you support your customers.
If you are still using an in-house application or older technology system and would like to migrate to a newer state of the art system simply call Jim Bowman at 703-683-5957 or email JBowman@locatoronline.com. He would also be happy to schedule an online demonstration of the software for you at your earliest convenience. MDNA members may qualify for a 10 percent discount!

States lure manufacturers and shore up jobs
CNBC
It wasn't long ago that the thought of corporations bringing their manufacturing back to the U.S. seemed all but impossible. But that's precisely what's happening, and the trend is predicted to continue through the rest of the decade. Consider Kent International, one of the largest U.S.-based bicycle manufacturers.

US manufacturing importing as many jobs as it exports, says group
The Wall Street Journal
America is now luring as many factory jobs back from overseas — a process known as reshoring — as it's losing to continued offshoring. That's the assessment of the Reshoring Initiative, a Chicago-based nonprofit that encourages companies considering moving work back to the U.S.

GE invests $5 million in manufacturing operations for new jobs
Manufacturing
GE's Industrial Solutions business is investing $5 million to strengthen its Mebane, North Carolina, operations, adding production and testing capabilities that enhance the customer experience. The investment builds on the company's local footprint that was expanded in October 2013 with the grand opening of GE's Power Equipment and Power Components global headquarters in Cary, North Carolina.
A look at manufacturing activity in the US
Forbes
For the last three years, manufacturing activity has been growing more rapidly than the overall U.S. economic GDP. This is the first time this has happened in more than 50 years. "I believe the factors that have led to this oddity are sustainable and that manufacturing and overall industrial growth will probably continue to outpace overall GDP growth rates in the United States for some time," writes Bill Greiner.
Will the decline of manufacturing jobs damage social mobility?
Brookings Institution
The United States is falling short on two fronts: the generation of upward social mobility and the generation of quality manufacturing jobs. Are they connected? Certainly many of the progressives gathered at Netroots Nation, a progressive political action conference, in Detroit, think so. The state of the middle-class worker was the focus of numerous panels. In the past, the weakening of labor unions would have been the main topic. This year, wage stagnation, income inequality, jobs gaps, investment and worker respect and dignity had the spotlight.

Factory output in California surging despite job losses
Los Angeles Times
California manufacturers really can do more with less. The output of state factories has surged 73 percent during the last 15 years — twice as fast as the rest of the nation — even as the sector bleeds jobs, according to a report from the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. Employment declined nearly 34 percent during the same period. The surge in production owes itself to innovations in machinery and materials, digitization and computing power, along with a strong network of industry clusters.
