CELEBRATE THE REUNION

MIKE AND IKE® are back together with a cool new look and enhanced flavors.

Let's go to the movies
QSR
The movie theater's lights dim. A man and woman sit cradled in a leather love seat–style recliner as the previews begin. A handful of black-clad waiters and waitresses scatter from the aisles, quietly, unobtrusively making their way out as the film rolls. The man and woman settle further into their seats and unfold napkins onto their laps. Before them is a sturdy foldout tray holding dinner and drinks: two gourmet cheeseburgers with sweet potato fries and a pair of ice-cold beers. Behind them sits a family of four, and while the kids munch on buttery popcorn and chocolate candy, mom and dad enjoy a fruit and cheese platter with a glass of crisp white wine.

Study examines efficacy of taxes on sugary drinks
The New York Times
**In an attempt to keep our members abreast of ongoing issues we present this news story that is available to the public electronically and in print.

A new study of how taxes might be used to curb consumption of sugary drinks suggests that applying a tax based on the amount of calories contained in a serving rather than its size would be more effective. The study, financed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which has long advocated taxing sodas and other sugary drinks as part of its efforts to reduce childhood obesity, found that consumption of calories in drinks would drop 9.3 percent if a tax of four-hundredths of a penny for every calorie was added to the price, but fall by just 8.6 percent under a tax of half a cent for each ounce in a can or bottle.

Just how big is the markup on movie theater food?
Yahoo
**In an attempt to keep our members abreast of ongoing issues we present this news story that is available to the public electronically and in print.

We all know that movie theater food is expensive. This is just a fact of life we have to accept, like sticky theater floors and shared-armrest jousting. But it's worth asking: Just how overpriced is movie food? To find out, Yahoo turned to the guy who wrote the book on the subject: Richard B. McKenzie, professor emeritus at the UC Irvine Merage School of Business and author of Why Popcorn Costs So Much at the Movies and Other Pricing Puzzles.

Both natural and artificial sweeteners aim to uplift diet soda volumes
Forbes
Sodas continue to face an uphill battle in the U.S. against growing health concerns among consumers regarding large amounts of sugar and calories in such drinks. Diet carbonated soft drinks, which offer a low/no calorie alternative, have fared even worse in the last couple of years in the domestic market, as consumers question the safety of artificial sweeteners.

21-and-over night at the park
ESPNW
"You blew it!" screamed Adam Sandler over the loudspeaker as a member of the Gateway Grizzlies struck out. Out past the left-field fence a heated game of beer pong played out as local band The Belvederes cranked out tunes and waitresses strolled the concourse with trays of orange Jello shots. It was baseball the way Kenny Powers intended. Recently, the Schaumburg Boomers of the independent Frontier League declared their stadium a "kid-free zone" and threw their first 21 and Over Night.

Warning label for sugary drinks passes California Senate
Reuters
**In an attempt to keep our members abreast of ongoing issues we present this news story that is available to the public electronically and in print.

A bill to require sugary soft drinks to carry labels warning of obesity, diabetes and tooth decay passed the California Senate, the latest move by lawmakers nationwide aimed at persuading people to drink less soda. The legislation next goes to the state Assembly, where it is likely to continue to face an ongoing tug-of-war battle between the U.S. food and beverage industry and public health officials, who have lobbied for the measure. Governor Jerry Brown would then have to sign it into law.
