Wine-infused popcorn makes for a boozy movie night snack

Popcorn over the years has gone from being a late night afterthought to the ultimate trendy snack, and one artisan popcorn maker wants to help create a little buzz for your next movie night or get-together this summer with its latest product: wine-infused popcorn. Populence, a gourmet popcorn bar located in New York City, teamed up with the New Zealand winery Kim Crawford to create two new wine-soaked popcorn flavors: Pinot Noir Chocolate Drizzle and Sauvignon Blanc Kettle.

President's Convention Scholarship awarded to Ovations' Hanauer

The National Association of Concessionaires (NAC) has announced that Jeff Hanauer has been awarded the 2013 President's Convention Scholarship. The event is being held from Aug. 6-9 at the Hilton Riverside Hotel in New Orleans. Hanauer is a General Manager for Ovations Food Service at a brand new AAA baseball stadium in El Paso, Texas. He graduated with a degree in accounting from Tulane University in 2002.

NAC Board affirms new by-laws
NAC
The National Association of Concessionaires (NAC) announced that the Executive Committee and Board of Directors have affirmed the new set of by-laws at their April meetings in Las Vegas. In order for these by-laws to take effect, they will have to be voted on by the membership. The vote will take place on Thursday, Aug. 8 during the Annual Membership Luncheon at the 2013 NAC Convention & Trade Show at the Hilton Riverside Hotel in New Orleans.

The Hilton Riverside has graciously extended the deadline for the NAC room block at this year's convention to well into July. Rooms are still available at the Hilton. Starbucks testing fountain sodas

Is Starbucks the next soda fountain? The Seattle-based company, which has been pushing to become known for more than just coffee, is experimenting with handcrafted sodas in stores in Atlanta and Austin, Texas. Its new drinks, made with a carbonation machine, come in such varieties as lemon ale, spiced root beer and ginger ale.

The sweet science of chocolate making

As the chocolatier charged with innovating new flavors for Chocolate Therapy stores in Dedham and Framingham, Rick Gemme is most inspired by his travels around the world. After a recent trip to Turkey, he experimented with a date and cardamom chocolate; a visit to Malta produced a citrus-tinged truffle. "I'm constantly in search of the perfect chocolate combination, which, in my opinion, is something that's not too sweet and has a little bit of savory, maybe a little salt," said Gemme. "This makes a nice contrast — not all one flavor note."

Mars promotes bite-size Snickers, following Hershey's cue

Copying the strategy of the Hershey Company, its archrival Mars has introduced a bite-size Snickers, which it will begin promoting through advertising and social media. Mars began distributing the new product, Snickers Bites, in May. It is a bite-size, unwrapped cube of Snickers, sold in a 2.83 ounce bag and an eight-ounce resealable pouch, which is meant to be shared.
