Marcus Theatres®, a division of The Marcus Corporation, announced it has signed an agreement to acquire the assets of Wehrenberg Theatres®, based in St. Louis, Missouri. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Wehrenberg Theatres is the oldest family-owned and operated theatre circuit in the United States, with 197 screens at 14 locations in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota. Upon completion of the transaction, Marcus Theatres will increase its number of screens by 29 percent, operating 885 screens at 68 locations in eight states.

Shareholders of Carmike Cinemas Inc. on Tuesday morning approved a sale of the chain to AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. The $1.2 billion deal would make Leawood-based AMC the nation's largest theater chain.
More than 86 percent of Carmike shares that voted in a special meeting were in favor of the deal. That's a turnaround from mid-summer, when AMC boosted its offer to $33.06 a share in cash and stock after large Carmike shareholders publicly rejected an earlier $30-a-share offer.

A senior-level group within the Food and Drug Administration has directed the agency's response to select high-profile and complex threats to food safety where voluntary food recalls were required. The group, Strategic Coordinated Oversight of Recall Execution, or SCORE, was established in April largely in response to concerns raised by the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the Inspector General about the ability of the FDA to ensure companies initiate voluntary food recalls in a prompt and effective manner.
