Do you frequently receive requests for large purchases that aren't in the budget? Does the staff feel like you hold the "purse strings" too tightly? One possible reason for these problems is a lack of knowledge and understanding of your church's financial picture. Some church leaders withhold financial information from most of the staff. They don't let anyone outside of the executive pastor or business administrator know much of anything about the budget or financial health of the church.

Church Executive
Internal controls are put in place to clearly define proper procedures for finance and accounting team members, to minimize risk, and to alleviate suspicion. Even churches must mitigate risk and ensure that policies and procedures are in place and functioning as intended. As a pastor or church administrator, think of establishing internal controls as “staying organized” but … on steroids. The process won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. And, once policies and procedures have been defined and documented, the crucial piece is execution.

Gleanings
Though pastors are stressed by overwhelming ministry demands and low salaries, only one percent abandon the pulpit each year. In a first-of-its-kind study, LifeWay Research surveyed 1,500 pastors of evangelical and historically black churches and found an estimated 13 percent of senior pastors in 2005 had left the pastorate 10 years later for reasons other than death or retirement. "Pastors are not leaving the ministry in droves," said vice president Scott McConnell.

Managing Your Church
Carpeting can cause slips and falls in a number of ways. Throw rugs on a wood or tile floor often slide unless they are positioned on a nonskid mat. Carpeting can curl around the edges and not lie flat on the floor. As a result, people can catch their shoes on the edge and trip and fall. Do not use throw rugs unless absolutely necessary. Inspect all carpeting and runners for loose edges, tears, or holes. Make sure all carpeting is properly tacked or glued down and repair tears or holes, or replace the carpet. Consider these examples that have prompted lawsuits.

Only 42 percent of U.S churches provide an opportunity for online giving by members of their congregations, according to a recent Dunham+Company/Campbell Rinker study. In contrast, 70 percent of non-church nonprofits enable online giving from donors, according to another Campbell Rinker study conducted in March 2015 for The NonProfit Times. The proportion of churches allowing online giving plummets to 29 percent of churches with less than 200 in attendance, yet jumps to 7 out of 10 churches with weekly attendance of 200 or more.

Baptist News Global
Churches already overwhelmed by the postmodern, post-denominational and post-Christian eras should brace themselves, experts say, for another layer of change: the “post-everything” age. That’s the term Baptist pastor and congregational coach Mark Tidsworth uses to roll together all the known and unknown “posts” facing the present-day church. Post-everything, he said, is “the descriptor I would like to use for describing what’s happening in the larger world around us, including what’s staring God’s Church in the face,” Tidsworth said in an Aug. 26 article he penned as president of South Carolina-based Pinnacle Leadership Associates.

Entrepreneur
Gallup concluded that 71 percent of all employees are either "not engaged" or "actively disengaged." In simple terms, most workers are producing far less than they were capable of producing. The problem of disengagement can become even more pronounced during the summer months or any time there is an economic slowdown. Employee attention tends to wander off to those “those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer” rather than their work responsibilities. So what can you do to keep your employees engaged, their morale high and performance at its peak during times of distraction?
