.BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
Making church decisions based on facts about COVID-19
Church Executive
The novel coronavirus, COVID-19 is one of seven types of known human coronaviruses.
COVID-19, like the MERS and SARS coronaviruses, likely evolved from a virus previously found in animals. The remaining known coronaviruses cause a significant percentage of colds in adults and children, and these are not a serious threat for otherwise healthy adults.
All viruses accumulate mutations over time and the virus that causes COVID-19 is no different. Therefore mutations, now changed, are harder to identify and control.

Episcopal News Service
The pressure of leading a small parish through the pandemic had been weighing on the Rev. Paige Hanks for months. She juggled a growing list of responsibilities, from producing online videos to improving the parish’s website and email communications to calling parishioners, some of whom she hadn’t seen in person since March. She sometimes logged 70-hour weeks as the part-time priest-in-charge at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church in St. Petersburg, Florida. Exhaustion was setting in.

Houston Chronicle

All told, 39% of Christians now say they would want their congregation to abide by a government shutdown order — a 17% drop since March, when researchers from Denison and Eastern Illinois universities first asked the question.

Small church, big impact
Lewis Center for Church Leadership
Every church, large and small, has a God-given potential to make a God-sized impact. But differently sized congregations have different challenges. While most leadership advice is aimed at the midsize congregation, the vast number of congregations (over 80% in my area) are smaller congregations with average worship attendance of 100 or less. And smaller congregations thrive in different ways than their larger sister churches.
