The recession continued to affect how much Americans gave to charity last year; and the triple whammy of Superstorm Sandy, a national election and the looming fiscal cliff may cut how much we donate in the crucial final month of 2012, experts say. Charitable giving overall increased by $6 billion in 2011, an increase of almost 4 percent from 2010, according to the 2012 report by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. Individuals gave $217 billion, compared with $209 billion in 2010. More

The IRS reports that 98 percent of nonprofit organizations underreport taxable income on forms W-2. In this session, Frank Sommerville, JD, CPA, will assist your organization to be in the 2 percent that are filed correctly. You will learn how to properly prepare W-2s for ministers and staff and avoid the dreaded penalties associated with incorrect W-2s. We will also discuss the proper preparation of 1099s, including who should receive them and how do you compute the proper amount reported on the 1099s. Penalties doubled in 2011. 2013 congregational economic impact survey

The Lake Institute on Faith & Giving at Indiana University, in partnership with The Alban Institute, Indianapolis Center for Congregations, Maximum Generosity, and the National Association of Church Business Administration, is doing a survey on how congregations have fared in recent years and how changes in the economy have impacted contributions to congregations. Standard mileage rates for 2013

The Internal Revenue Service has issued the 2013 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. The rate for business miles driven during 2013 increases one cent from the 2012 rate. More

Crystal Cathedral: Schullers lose in court
