Convincing people to give their time and energy away for free isn't always an easy task. Once you do have them on the team, though, you definitely want to avoid actions that push them away. Here are five things I've seen repel volunteers, along with a few simple ways to retain volunteers and help them grow as members of their local church.

Veronica Abney-Church Administrator, Salem Baptist Church of Chicago
To All Senior and Executive Pastors!
Veronica Abney, a member of The Church Network, is a doctoral student at Olivet Nazarene University, located in Bourbonnais, Illinois. As part of her doctoral research, she has established a partnership with the Best Christian Workplace Institute (BCWI) to conduct a pastoral self-evaluation survey. She is asking for your participation in completing the survey. The purpose of the study is to examine whether the academic completion levels of pastors that participated in the 2014-2015 Outreach Magazine/Lifeway research study were more academically prepared in ministry effectiveness than pastors who did not attend any academic or seminary institution.
How to Participate In the Research Study
Your participation in this research is voluntary and confidential. Once you begin the survey, you may withdraw participation at any time. All information collected in this survey will remain confidential. Here is the link that will take you to the self-evaluation survey, which may take about 15 minutes. https://www.research.net/r/LeadershipPastoralPreparation
The Olivet Nazarene University Institutional Review Board (IRB) conducts the research approval process. If you have any questions about the research project, please contact: Veronica Abney by phone at: (773) 371-2377 or email at: viabney@olivet.edu.
If you have questions about the review or the operation of the pastoral self-evaluation survey, please contact hsnyder@bcwinstitute.org.

Start the new year with an updated awareness and move confidently through the legal maze of the ever growing body of church employment law.
This seminar will cover:

- Your questions
Join Frank Sommerville on Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. CT / 3 p.m. ET who will re-introduce these laws and highlight the church's compliance issues.

As a church communicator, you need to stop trying to get everyone's attention and trying to communicate to everyone. It won't work.

HH Architects
Designed and built with an amusement park in mind, the HH team completed the Crossroads Christian Church children’s education building in 2015 with an astonishing result. After research by the design team, multiple concepts were presented to the pastoral team at Crossroads. None of the concepts specifically met with the expectations of the pastors, initially. In the final concept session, an idea was sketched on the back of a napkin that the pastors found irresistible.

The future of Obamacare – the name commonly bestowed on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – is up in the air. President-elect Trump has vowed to “repeal and replace” the massive health insurance law as one of his first acts in office. However, for the time being, it remains the law of the land.
Now the IRS has extended one of the key deadlines for reporting information under the ACA (IRS Notice 2016-70, 11/18/16). The delay is intended to give employers more time to cope with the confusing array of rules under the controversial law.

Ever been a part of a team that doesn’t play up to their potential? It happens for all kinds of reasons, including poor preparation. Sometimes teams just aren’t prepared to play the game. They haven’t had enough practice and game-like repetitions. Sometimes they don’t have a clear strategy that tells everyone what to do next. Sometimes they’re not emotionally or mentally prepared. When the whistle blows and the ball is kicked it’s too late to prepare. It’s the responsibility of the Coach to get their players prepared to play.

A new salary limit for the Fair Labor Standard Act's overtime rule was supposed to take effect Dec. 1. But the changes, which would affect about 4 million workers, have come to a screeching halt after a preliminary injunction by a federal judge in Texas. The new rule would have allowed more employees to qualify for overtime pay by raising the minimum salary of "exempt" employees from $23,660 to $47,476. So what does this court ruling mean for both businesses and their employees?

Whatever the final result of the huge, long-running protests by native Americans against the Dakota Access Pipeline, the demonstrations will surely be remembered as a landmark in relations between organized religion, Christianity in particular, and indigenous people. Along with representatives of over 200 indigenous groups from across the New World, camped out at the Standing Rock Reservation since April, Christian clergy have been adding their voice to the protests in multiple ways.

The reassessment has a direct effect on homeowners, but the evaluations branch out to other properties. The New Hope Baptist Church is challenging new taxes. It's a place for worship and community action, on one piece of property. Ron Anderson, Treasurer of the church, said all 6.7 acres are on one deed and the area has been exempt to taxes, until now. The reassessment gave commissioners an opportunity to re-evaluate all properties including churches. "They picked out three areas of our church grounds and said 'you don't need them, we're going to tax you,'" Anderson said. State law acknowledges places practicing regular religious worship, and areas necessary for those organizations are exempt.

The tumultuous presidential campaign may have dominated conversation in other walks of life this year, but there was little explicit discussion about the election or the candidates in America’s houses of worship, according to new Pew Research Center survey data. Among voters who report attending religious services at least once a month, relatively few say information on political parties or candidates was made available to them in their places of worship (14 percent), and even fewer say they were encouraged to vote in a particular way by their clergy (5 percent).
