Building Codes for Building Decks, a 4-Part Series — Earn your Master Deck Builder Certification with NADRA in 2012
NADRA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
This is a four-part series, which includes four core building code courses and provides a comprehensive explanation of how the 2009 and 2012 International Residential Code regulates deck construction, from initial design to project completion. These courses support the North American Deck and Railing Association's Master Deck Builder Certification program and are intended to prepare the audience for the four exams, respective to each course, that are required for NADRA member's to earn their MDB Certification. NADRA is launching the first two courses in March, April and May.

NADRA 2012 Education Tour Dates — First two classes of the series will be offered in the following locations:
  • March 29 & 30 - Atlantic City, N.J.
  • April 5 & 6 – Michigan
  • April 19 & 20 – Minnesota
  • May 3 & 4 – Atlanta, Ga. (Tentative)

We are gearing up for our 2012 D4S Builds. If you are a current NADRA member and interested in donating products, materials for the builds, please email with "2012 D4S" in the subject line. If you would kindly include the following information in your email to us, we would greatly appreciate it.
  • Brief description of products / material that you are willing to donate for the build
  • States / Locations you can distribute material to
  • Contact Information, including a phone number / email where we can get in touch with you
If you are a NADRA member, but don't necessarily have a product that can be used for a build, but want to help, here are a few ideas that are helpful and truly go a long way:
  • Assist the local chapter in public relations, such as contacting local news stations, magazines, newspapers about the build. Help the chapter by writing updates, recaps, etc for NADRA News and PR
  • Work with a local caterer to help supply the food for the local D4S Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
  • Food and Drink for the job site during the build
  • Porta Potty service for the job site
  • Contact for more ways you can help!
Thank you to all our members that have donated so much time, energy, materials and know-how to one of NADRA's programs that we all hold very close to our hearts. Here is to our best year yet!

I'm excited to announce that I am working on a new book branded by Dewalt and published by Cengage Learning, "A Visual Guide to DeckConstruction." Unlike my first book, published by ICC, I'll talk decks outside of just interpreting code sections. In planning for this book, I had an idea ...

NADRA members, send me your photos! As a visual guide, I need lots of examples, some will be graphics, and others photos. While I've got quite a collection of photos, I'd like to feature yours instead. If I'm going to discuss applications of hardware, structural screws, under-deck drainage systems, fire pits, decking, nails, screws, concrete forms, lighting, helical piers on and on and on… then why not use photos that can credit products made by my fellow NADRA members. This won't be a buyer's guide, but it will introduce the pro builder to all the new products, ideas and innovation in the deck industry today. That's the plan of course, with your help.

Best Advice from NADRA Builders! How would you like your name after that title? Hey, I definitely know decks and have plenty of tricks, but I don't know it all. I'd like to hear and see all the great deck ideas that you guys have, from hiding wires for lights, to mounting guard posts, to some neat trick you've got for stair stringers! Materials, methods, tools, whatever! I'd like to see some special spots throughout the book where NADRA members share their best and show the industry what we're made of. So ... how many times can we get the name NADRA in this book? Let's find out and help build this association even stronger! I can't get NADRA out without NADRA members!

The Right to Rescind by NADRA member, David Elenbaum
NADRA Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
You worked the prospect and turned it into a quote. You worked the quote and turned it into a sale. You got a start check and ordered materials. Now the guy calls and says's, "I've changed my mind, I'm not doing the job, I want my money back." Can he do that? The answer is maybe. When it comes to legal advice, an attorney is the best way to go to help shed some light on the Right of Rescission. It seems to vary a little from state to state but one thing seems common all over. The customer usually has three business days to change their mind, so if you close the sale on Thursday, they are supposed to notify you by Monday night. Some could argue that the three business days start the moment you sign, so if it is 7 p.m. on Thursday, then it might not be up until Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Ambiguity on agreements is a distracting and often costly issue for deck builders.

When writing the verbiage for your contracts make sure you include a Right of Rescission clause that has clear instructions on how to exercise the rescission.

Environmental concerns prove to be an important component for new build or remodel projects for both consumers and businesses according to a recent customer survey conducted by Krantz Select Woods, a leading online wood purveyor headquartered in Austin, Texas. Krantz announced that they have released the findings of their Green Survey, conducted in November. The informal survey included both consumers and professionals, and sought to gauge consumer and commercial use of and attitudes about green building materials. More

1 surefire way to be a better leader

Harry S. Truman once said: "It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit." These words are echoed by John Donovan, chief technology officer at AT&T, in a recent New York Times interview. One of the leadership lessons Donovan learned in his career is that "people appreciate you when you play for results, and not for your role on the team," he said in the interview. He added that he learned "that giving credit away, deflecting credit, was an effective thing to do." More

The best practices from family businesses
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Chances are when you hear the term "family business," it conjures up quaint images of friendly mom-and-pop establishments straight out of Norman Rockwell — maybe a corner grocery like Mr. Hooper's Store or a small-town B&B. In reality, family businesses are anything but quaint. Family firms make up the majority of companies in the world, with places like the Middle East and Asia being primarily driven by family businesses. More than 30 percent of large U.S. companies are family-controlled. They are tech companies, manufacturing, oil and everything in between — and some are global powerhouses and household names. Experts weigh in on best practices of family business that can be applied to any type of business or organization. More
