NADRA successfully launches another first-ever industry event!
NADRA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

Grand Ballroom at the Providence Biltmore where NADRA Education events were held.

Understanding the Existing Structure was launched on March 24, at The Biltmore in Providence, Rhode Island. This course is one of a four-part series designed to help contractors prepare for their NADRA MDB* Certification exams (Master Deck Builder).

More than 75 industry professionals gathered the evening before the big day of education for a networking dinner on the 17th floor of the historic Biltmore hotel. About 40 of those attendees were from NADRA's very own New England Chapter.

NADRA thanks dinner sponsors, Harvey, Boston Cedar and CertainTeed.

Fred Aldrich, NE Chapter President states, "It is truly an exciting time in our industry and the NADRA events in Providence are a great example of that excitement."

With sponsors like Fiberon & TimberTech who are willing to support the Association on these ground level programs, NADRA has been able to bring first-ever events to the industry, such as the annual meeting and cocktail reception, industry deck awards, and now the first-ever industry Certification for Deck Builders along with the new Factory Trained programs that others are sure to fellow!

Tony Groh, Northeast Regional Sales Manager, TimberTech states, "I was very impressed with the NADRA event in Providence. The quality of the NADRA member contractors is very evident. It is refreshing to participate in presentations where the audience is so engaged and the questions so insightful. It was obvious that those present are on a continuous quest to improve their craft. We look forward to the next NADRA event."

From Fred Aldrich, NADRA New England Chapter President:

I would like to thank all those who attended our chapter meeting this past week in Providence, R.I. It is truly an exciting time in our industry and the events last week are a great example of that excitement.

At our third meeting of the New England chapter we had more than 40 members and prospective members join us in Providence. In addition we were joined by members of the Board of Directors of the National NADRA. This was a great turnout for a chapter that had its first meeting in February.

We discussed and learned about some great programs we hope to participate in at the local level:
  • Deck Safety Month
  • Deck for a Soldier
  • Recognition awards – Deck Competition

NADRA New England Chapter meeting held at the Providence Biltmore in Rhode Island. Forty deck pros packed the room.

Most importantly we had a great opportunity to network with the best professionals in the decking and railing industry, from the leading manufacturers, distributors, to the best contractors.

Our next chapter meeting is:

May 10, 2011
5 p.m. EST
Harvey Building Products
1400 Main St.
Waltham, Mass.

A detailed agenda will be sent prior to that meeting. However the goal of establishing working committees to work on local chapter programs will definitely be part of that meeting.

Harnessing social media in the construction industry
Journal of Commerce    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Social media is transforming business communications and the marketing of products and services to clients, but the key to online success is developing a good strategy. "Give your customers information they won't find anywhere else," said MS2 Productions Executive Producer Melissa Shenk. "No matter what you do in construction, if you humanize what you do, establish a presence online and nurture relationships, that is a real game changer. It can open up new markets." More

Material costs jump, vex weary contractors
Crain's Cleveland Business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rapidly rising costs of building materials such as copper and steel pose a new problem for a construction industry already bedeviled by its worst slowdown in 50 years. Materials linked to the global commodity markets spiked astronomically over the last few years even as U.S. construction was at a virtual standstill. More

Improvement appraisal: No price for enjoyment
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jeffrey Backus is a little unconvinced at attempts to put a value on work done in a home. "How can you put a value on the enjoyment of something you have?" says the president of Manor House Kitchen and Bath. "It's like buying a Corvette, driving it for four years and selling it. You get a lot less money than you paid, but how do you put a value on the fun you had driving it?" He is prompted to consider the issue by the Cost vs. Value Report developed every year by the National Association of Realtors and published in Remodeling magazine. It is fueled by a survey that seeks national and retail expenses for household projects and reports on how much those jobs net in resale. More

Building Products Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For green to take hold in the industry and become a sustainable new standard, suppliers must work with their customers to find more cost-effective methods for accomplishing green goals. Going green means so much more than changing to certified products or spending great sums of money to meet a goal of zero energy. By working together, both builders and suppliers can lower costs and boost profits-a major consideration anytime, but especially so in a down economy. More
