The joys of outdoor living beckon
The Santa Fe New Mexican
With spring upon us, we begin thinking about bringing the indoors out — outdoor living being such a bonus to living in Northern New Mexico. There are many months when our living space can spill over to the areas surrounding our home for appreciation of the star-filled night skies, fairy tale sunsets and the crisp air. Many Santa Fe homes are designed with deep portals allowing for "rooms" off of interior rooms, and the prevalence of flat roofs provides opportunities for roof or observatory decks as well.

The fusion of science and color for exterior durable building materials
By Bob Harris
"Wow! What a beautiful color!" How many times have you heard this statement? This response is typically associated with fashion, autos, paint, etc., where color is a primary consideration for the purchase or refinishing of products that are part of our everyday world. The importance of color in our lives and in the design criteria of products we purchase can be seen by the extensive market research effort made to predict color trends. What does all this color talk have to do with decking and other exterior building products? The answer is plenty.

Professional Deck Builder editor Andy Engel says, 'so long'
Professional Deck Builder
Andy Engel writes: In my first Editor's Letter in this magazine five years ago, I used a rodeo allusion. I'm going to use another in this letter: It's been a great ride, but my eight seconds are up. I'm moving on, a very tough decision. In this job, I met a lot of great people: colleagues, authors and readers. I think it's safe to say that I made more friends than enemies. Deck builders, it turns out, are uniformly fun and engaging folks, and holy cow, do you guys build some wonderful stuff! I'll miss you.

Service today, success tomorrow
By Bob Fortune
Superior service pays off. It leads to increased revenue, increased pricing power, word-of-mouth advertising and avoiding unhappy clients badmouthing your reputation. "On average, research shows that a 1 percent improvement in customer satisfaction is associated with a 4.6 percent increase in a firm's market value," said Dr. Claes Fornell, an international expert on customer satisfaction and creator of the American Consumer Satisfaction Index.

The 10/10/10 rule for tough decisions
Fast Company
It's easy to lose perspective when we're facing a thorny dilemma. Blinded by the particulars of the situation, we'll waffle and agonize, changing our mind from day to day. One tool we can use was invented by Suzy Welch. It's called 10/10/10, and Welch describes it in a book of the same name. To use 10/10/10, we think about our decisions on three different time frames: How will we feel about it 10 minutes from now? How about 10 months from now? How about 10 years from now?
