May is Deck Safety Month® NADRA Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A deck is the perfect place to enjoy the warm weather with friends and loved ones. But an unsafe deck could possibly collapse, causing serious injuries to you and your guests. The number of deck failures and resulting injuries has been increasing at an alarming rate. Between 2000 and 2008, there were at least 30 deaths reported as a direct result of deck collapses, and more than 75 percent of people on a deck when it collapses are injured or killed. With 40 million decks in the United States that are more than 20 years old, it's important for homeowners to check their deck. NADRA is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the necessity for regular inspection and maintenance of existing decks and proper installation of new decks. Provided here for your convenience is NADRA's official Deck Evaluation Checklist. More resources related to deck safety are available at www.NADRA.org.

More Outdoor living spaces can help homes sell faster Austin American-Statesman Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Although home sellers often think primarily of the indoor areas in their home when putting their house on the market, oftentimes it is the outdoor areas — the deck, gardens, lawns, and in some cases, outdoor kitchens, sports court or pool — that can make or break a sale. An excellent outdoor living area makes a property stand out from other similar ones, says James Irwin, head of the construction division of Everything Outdoors. More Deck and porch railings not only enhance safety, but add decorative style as well Las Vegas Review-Journal Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For years, homeowners considered railing the icing on the cake when considering a deck - it was nice to have, but not essential. Those same homeowners are now realizing that finishing their decks with a complementary railing system can provide the added safety and beauty needed to truly capitalize on their investment. More
Lighting designers love to work in landscapes Chicago Daily Herald Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Landscape lighting is essentially comprised of two major types — path or spread lighting, used to illuminate walkways and the like, and accent lighting, often placed in wells or ground-based, spotlight-type fixtures. Variations on accent lighting include water lighting fixtures designed to be used around pools, fountains and similar features. Entryway lighting can also be part of the design, as can deck and patio lighting, depending on lifestyle needs. Proper placement of deck lighting can particularly create a mood. More For outdoor living spaces, think high style and low maintenance Las Vegas Review-Journal Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There's a difference between the modern outdoor space and what's been the standard in the past. Today, a few stray folding chairs on the grass and burgers on a beat-up old grill doesn't quite cut it anymore. Outdoor spaces are increasingly viewed as extensions of a home's interior - and just as worthy of careful designing and planning. That doesn't necessarily mean spending a fortune - one of the best ways to keep costs reasonable is to use materials that don't require a lot of maintenance. More

February starts also posted impressive year-over-year gains of 54 percent, showing that the March result is not a one-time fluke.
