May is right around the corner, and we all know what that means. It's time to gear
up for Deck Safety Month®!
A deck is the perfect place to enjoy the warm weather with friends and loved ones. But an unsafe deck could possibly collapse, causing serious injuries to you and your guests. The number of deck failures and resulting injuries has been increasing at an alarming rate. Between 2000 and 2008, there were at least 30 deaths reported as a direct result of deck collapses, and more than 75 percent of people on a deck when it collapses are injured or killed. With 40 million decks in the United States that are more than 20 years old, it's important for homeowners to check their deck. NADRA is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the necessity for regular inspection and maintenance of existing decks and proper installation of new decks. Heavy winter snowfall could mean dangerous decks KSTP-TV Share
 You might want to check out the safety of your deck, before you step outside to enjoy it. Some local deck experts say the weight of heavy winter snow can seriously compromise deck structures. According to the North American Deck and Railing Association, there have been at least 13 deck collapses in Minnesota in the past year.

There are some hopeful signs for construction, even though the topline figures for spending and employment remain at depression levels, according to Associated General Contractors Chief Economist Ken Simonson. Some sectors and regions have turned positive. On April 19, the Census Bureau reported that seasonally adjusted multifamily starts in March jumped 28 percent from a year earlier. February starts also posted impressive year-over-year gains of 54 percent, showing that the March result is not a one-time fluke. Big jumps in diesel and other energy based products plus gypsum, aluminum and steel products and smaller rises in concrete products caused a 2 percent rise in the construction materials price index in March from February. The Index is up 4 percent in the last three months and 6.8 percent over the last year. The March gain brought the index above the previous peak level in September 2008. More
