Construction industry finally getting some good news Belleville News-Democrat Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last month marked the first time in almost three years that the nation's construction industry witnessed an employment increase. Preliminary numbers released earlier this month by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that 15,000 jobs were added to construction company payrolls in March for a total of almost 5.6 million jobs. The last increase was reported in June 2007, when 11,000 jobs were added for a total of almost 7.7 million. Every month since had witnessed job cuts, including 153,000 lost in January 2009. More

Operating from word of mouth with practically no marketing budget for almost ten full years, this economy drove us to getting our name out in front of many more homeowners. The float idea came up and seemed like an inexpensive and fun way to accomplish this. It also gave an opportunity to work at something that was not constrained by the site or someone else's ideas. Now, at least one supporter says it may have to abandon the money-losing experiment, underscoring the difficulties of trying to grow ecologically minded niche businesses during an economic downturn. Since Sustainable Northwest opened its yard for lumber products from trees that don't come from threatened forests in 2008, dozens of small-town mills in the Pacific Northwest have come to depend it. The lumberyard takes their wood and sells it to customers such as home builders and suppliers of green products to the building industry. According to information from the National Association of Home Builders, the price of 1,000 board feet of framing lumber as of April 16, was $353, up $141 from April 17, of last year when it was $212. Similar increases have been observed in the prices of other types of lumber as well. It convened on April 14-16, at the Atlantic City Convention Center in Atlantic City, NJ. The annual event was hosted by the New Jersey Builders Association (NJBA), and drew 9,000 attendees from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. The three-day tradeshow and conference featured 600 exhibits, a distinguished list of guests and presenters, timely and relevant educational programs, and a number of social and networking events.
