Construction industry finally getting some good news
Belleville News-Democrat    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Last month marked the first time in almost three years that the nation's construction industry witnessed an employment increase. Preliminary numbers released earlier this month by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that 15,000 jobs were added to construction company payrolls in March for a total of almost 5.6 million jobs. The last increase was reported in June 2007, when 11,000 jobs were added for a total of almost 7.7 million. Every month since had witnessed job cuts, including 153,000 lost in January 2009. More

How to float and not leave shore
NADRA Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There are many ways to get yourself out before the public. Building a float and participating in some local parades is a good way to show people that you are out there. This is one thing that we did this past year. Operating from word of mouth with practically no marketing budget for almost ten full years, this economy drove us to getting our name out in front of many more homeowners. The float idea came up and seemed like an inexpensive and fun way to accomplish this. It also gave an opportunity to work at something that was not constrained by the site or someone else's ideas. 'Green wood' lumberyard out on a limb
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nonprofit environmental group Sustainable Northwest got into the lumber business two years ago to build the market for "green wood." Now, at least one supporter says it may have to abandon the money-losing experiment, underscoring the difficulties of trying to grow ecologically minded niche businesses during an economic downturn. Since Sustainable Northwest opened its yard for lumber products from trees that don't come from threatened forests in 2008, dozens of small-town mills in the Pacific Northwest have come to depend it. The lumberyard takes their wood and sells it to customers such as home builders and suppliers of green products to the building industry. More

Heavy duty wood treatment braced for revival
Building Products Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A grand old wood preservative, capable of protecting species that other chemicals cannot, may be poised for a revival. It made news recently with an expanded listing in the treated wood standards, and is being considered more frequently for heavy-duty applications. Ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate (ACZA or often known by its brand name, Chemonite) was formulated in the 1980s by J. H. Baxter & Co., San Mateo, Calif., which continues to treat with it. More

Summer is almost here, but the usual rise in construction may encounter a roadblock in the form of rising lumber prices that are posing problems for suppliers, retailers and contractors alike. According to information from the National Association of Home Builders, the price of 1,000 board feet of framing lumber as of April 16, was $353, up $141 from April 17, of last year when it was $212. Similar increases have been observed in the prices of other types of lumber as well. More
