May is Deck Safety Month!
An effort to save lives and prevent injuries

NADRA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Your deck is the perfect place to enjoy the warm weather with friends and loved ones. But an unsafe deck could possibly collapse, causing serious injuries to you and your guests. The number of deck failures and resulting injuries has been increasing at an alarming rate. Between 2000 and 2008, there were at least 30 deaths reported as a direct result of deck collapses, and more than 75 percent of people on a deck when it collapses are injured or killed. With 40 million decks in the United States that are more than 20 years old, it's important for homeowners to check their deck. The North American Deck and Railing Association is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the necessity for regular inspection and maintenance of existing decks and proper installation of new decks. For more information, check out the 2010 Deck Safety Consumer Checklist and Deck Evaluation Form. More

Make an old deck look new again. Resurface, reuse.

The easiest way to renew your pressure treated wood deck is to thoroughly clean it of dirt and debris. Also, make sure all the lumber fasteners are countersunk into the surface. Scrub rust marks and stains from the surface, then sand down any visible imperfections in the wood deck surface with a portable walk behind sander. These deck sanders make quick work when sanding wood decks and can be rented from your local equipment rental outlet. More

Construction spending in the U.S. unexpectedly increased in March, propelled by gains in state and local government projects. The 0.2 percent increase brought spending to $847.3 billion, and followed a revised 2.1 percent drop in February that was larger than previously estimated, Commerce Department figures showed in Washington. The value of private projects dropped to the lowest level in 11 years. More

Good news from the housing sector
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recent reports on housing starts, new home sales and housing prices show that the housing recovery continues. The housing crash is the single most important factor that started this recession, so it would be nice to know when it will end. Although the housing inventory exceeded the demand in 2007 and 2008, we have known for a while that the fundamental supply and demand ingredients would permit a genuine housing recovery to begin in 2009. As demand caught up, housing prices stopped falling and stabilized at more normal levels. More

Lumber costs jump through the roof
Beaver County Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the past two years, John Sockaci has seen a drop in calls from people wanting new homes built. But as he and his crew remain busy building additions, putting up drywall and other projects, the general contractor has seen another trend: The price of lumber has gone through the roof. The price of lumber has stacked up dramatically in the last year, more than double from last year, according to the National Association of Home Builders, which estimates that the cost of lumber and wood products account for about one-third of the costs of materials used to build a home. Net sales for the first quarter of 2010 totaled $66.3 million compared to net sales of $67.7 million for the 2009 first quarter.
