Being in the deck-building business, NADRA member Ken Kroog generally sees one or two deck failures a year. In the last few weeks, he's seen six collapsed decks. Many, having been improperly built or maintained, succumbed to the heavy snow load imposed by the late February storm. Fortunately, no one was hurt. It is estimated that there is one major deck failure each week in the U.S. where people are injured or killed. These deck owners were informed that they were lucky that it was snow that caused the collapse and not the weight of family and friends gathered at their next outdoor party. More

If you ever want to elicit groans from dealers, just mention FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). Dealers pay fees to obtain the FSC "Chain of Custody" certificate, and then they pay more fees to renew that certification. Now, if you think the dealer groans about FSC are loud, just mention FSC to builders. Since USGBC's LEED standard accepts only FSC-certified lumber, builders are forced to buy it, often at a premium, to achieve the LEED lumber point. The drills, saws and sanders that fell silent during the economic slowdown are beginning to whir again. For the first time in years, U.S. builders are hiring laborers. The nation's construction industry added 14,000 jobs nationwide in April, according to the Labor Department, marking the first back-to-back monthly gains in that sector since 2006. In all, 29 states gained construction jobs that month, according to data released by the Associated General Contractors of America. The U.S. industry has been bolstered in part by federal stimulus funds for infrastructure and the slow but steady improvement in the housing market. More

The surge in construction materials prices continued in April with the price index up 1.1 percent from March. Plywood prices jumped 15.5 percent to the highest level since 2005. Softwood lumber prices rose 4.5 percent to a three year high level. Spot lumber prices have dropped 10 percent since the April price survey week. The spring price surge was due to the slow adjustment of mills to an increase in demand by contractors. A partial rollback of the recent price jump is expected in the next few months. Nonetheless, the price index for single family construction materials spiked 5.1 percent in April causing a temporary reduction homebuilder margins. There will always be parents, teachers and, later, bosses and co-workers who will make excuses for the non-performer. I've been in sales for over 40 years. I've worked with and trained hundreds of salespeople and only 5 percent of them just couldn't sell. They just did not have the personality to make up for it. Let's flip that around. Of the salespeople I've seen fail, 100 percent of them have one thing in common: they don't work hard enough. This is not the insidious part. We are not talking about the people who just can't do it. We are talking about the people who can sell, but just don't want to put in the effort to be great. These salespeople are not driven. They are in sales because they want to hide. More
