The New England Chapter of NADRA surprises a soldier last night with news of a new deck!
NADRA New England Chapter    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

We decided to deliver the news a little different for our soldier, says Ed Lenzi, New England Chapter Deck for a Soldier Chair. We contacted the family of the soldier to let them know they will be receiving a deck, free of charge; but we decided not to tell the soldier - not just yet! Last night, the family came out for a celebratory dinner (Dracut, Mass.) as their son just received a scholarship (so they thought). Instead, waiting for them at the restaurant, were many of our local NADRA chapter members, family of the soldier and a design of their new deck! I think it is fair to say the surprise was a success!

The chapter plans to build the deck for their soldier at the end of July. They will be using Fiberon decking, Trex railing and furniture, Atlantis Railing lighting, lumber by BB&S, fasteners from FastenMaster and trim board from AZEK. Local NADRA builders will be donating their time and skills to build the deck. A complete list of all donating companies will be provided once the chapter completes the building plans.

If you are a NADRA member, and would like to help the New England chapter in any way with this build, please contact Ed Lenzi through email at The chapter is still looking to secure a member(s) to help with the purchase of Tshirts as well as the catering and supplies for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Thank you to everyone who has helped so far! We couldn't do it without you! We are excited to give back to someone who has put so much on the line so we can have our coffee every morning. This guy was overseas for three tours as his family was left behind managing. If you want more information on the soldier and his family, you can email me (Ed) and I will send you some information on their story if you have not already received it.

Your New England Chapter Board of Directors and Local D4S Chair, Ed Lenzi

Decking and railing market expected to reach $3.4 billion in 2011
Business Wire    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Total demand for decking and railing in the North American residential market was up slightly in 2010 compared to 2009, and is expected to show a modest increase in 2011 to $3.4 billion, according to Principia's new report on the industry. Total decking and railing industry value, based on manufacturers' pricing, will increase by over 5 percent in 2011. This growth is driven largely by price increases for most all plastic-based decking and railing as well as continued product mix shift from lower-priced uncapped wood-plastic composites to premium capped WPCs and cellular vinyl decking. Product Review: LED deck lighting
EcoHome Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Five years ago, Baltimore deck builder Dave Lombardo would buy 10 packs of LED deck lights from The Home Depot, string them together, and then tiptoe off the deck lest one flicker out. But in the past few years, LED deck light technology has been transformed. Not only are they more energy efficient than halogens and incandescents, they come in hundreds of styles, don't usually require an electrician for installation, and offer one surprising perk for homeowners: Bugs don't flock to them. A deck with a view
Calgary Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Every morning, Ron and Judy Bing would look out their deck doors from their kitchen, and instead of seeing the magnificent trees in their yard and the 15th hole on the Douglasdale Golf Course, they saw wood railing. Their walkout bungalow home had a deck backing out onto the yard overlooking the golf course, and the railing along the 15-metre wide deck was getting in the way of the view, says Ron Bing, a semi-retired petroleum engineer. Lumber industry starts to see upswing
Youngstown Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ohio lumber businesses, devastated by the recession and plunge in the construction market, see signs of new life, report yard owners and industry specialists. Still, business is far from the levels the retail and wholesale lumber industry enjoyed six years ago when building and construction activity proceeded at a brisk pace. "I'd say it's the best it's been in three or four years," reports Robert Holmes, president of M.E. Supply Inc., Columbiana. "We've probably seen a 20 percent improvement over the dark days." More

Oregon's timber harvest rebounds, sort of
The Oregonian    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Coming back from the worst year on record, Oregon's 2010 timber harvest increased 17 percent to to 3.2 billion board feet. A spike in lumber prices and increased exports to China drove up the demand and price for logs, which in turn caused the increased harvest total, according to an Oregon Department of Forestry news release. Low-maintenance materials key to a relaxing outdoor living space
North American Press Syndicate    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Having outdoor living space is important to today's homeowners, but, according to MarketWatch, homeowners no longer want huge yards to maintain. They want smaller yards, complete with entertaining centers and grilling and dining areas. Designing these spaces is much like designing an outdoor living room. While many are looking to incorporate outdoor space that will improve their home's curb appeal, no one wants the headache of maintenance, repair and upkeep. More

Materials go green
Calgary Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Whether they're painting the siding, putting in a new deck, or staining a new set of patio furniture, many folks are seeking out environmentally friendly options for the materials they use. Although the 2011 Canadian Green Home Index (developed for The Home Depot by Environics Research) shows a decrease in people choosing to go green in their homes, there's still a lot of interest in seeking out alternatives to old-school paints, stains and building materials. Oil still the story in construction prices - although more muted lately
Wichita Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When it comes to construction material prices, the conversation has been about one thing - oil. The reprieve in ever-rising prices finally appears to be here as oil topped out in early April and has sunk back to about $100 a barrel. But the latest surge in petroleum has left its mark for those in the commercial construction industry. More
