America's love affair with decks By Jim Groff, CMO at The Wolf Organization, Inc. (NADRA Member) Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() U.S. decking demand is forecast to grow by nearly 25 percent – to over $5 billion dollars – by 2013, according to industry leading research firm, The Freedonia Group. Wood will continue to lead the way, representing over 75 percent of material sold and 56% of sales dollars. More than 60 percent of decking will go into residential construction, with over 90 percent of residential demand slated for the improvement or replacement of existing decks. Gains will be driven by the continued popularity of decks as an outdoor space for entertaining, along with growth in the size of decks preferred by today's homeowners. Demand for outdoor kitchens, spas, hot tubs, fire pits and other amenities will also grow as consumers extend both the size and the functionality of their outdoor space. Acceptance of wood-plastic composite and PVC decking will accelerate as homeowners look for more low maintenance materials. Improvements in aesthetics, increased availability, and higher quality railings and accessories will help fuel this growth. The southern and western portions of the United States are forecast to post the most rapid decking gains due to increases in population and housing stock. The Northeast will trail the national average as a result of less favorable economic expansion and construction growth. Homeowner safety will be a priority, as injuries from falls and structural collapses continues to rise, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Regular inspection of existing outdoor decks, including repair or retrofit as necessary, will prevent injuries and ensure the long-term safety and enjoyment of one of America's favorite home features.

More End of credit, rising imports hammer lumber prices Building Products Online Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As lumber prices retreat to lows for the year, calls for production to again conform to current demand levels are growing. This is reminiscent of 2008 and 2009, when the long slog to bring production and consumption into balance was occurring. Eventually, in the latter half of 2009, a balance was restored. Now that the housing stimulus in the form of homebuyers tax credits ended April 30, demand is wavering. The pace of housing starts and permits has the appearance of slowing, builders are less confident about what the future holds, and the real estate industry is forecasting a two to three month period in which home sales will decline. Within the wood products industry, reports of a downturn in the business climate surfaced early in the second quarter. More
Good news, bad news on construction spending Daily Finance Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It feels like any good news lately for the U.S. economy lately is accompanied by bad news, and the latest report on the construction industry is no exception: Construction spending in June unexpectedly rose 0.1 percent, boosted by the federal government's fiscal stimulus, the Commerce Department reported. However, the May construction spending total was revised to a 1 percent decline, considerably worse than the initially announced 0.2 percent dip. More

The third month of construction employment declines, despite the stimulus, reflects overall weak demand for private, local and state funded construction, association officials noted. More Trex reports elevated sales Home Channel News Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Winchester, Va.-based Trex, the decking and railing manufacturer, posted strong second-quarter sales of $115.5 million, up 26.3 percent from $91.5 million in the same quarter last year.
