NADRA Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mike Wolgammuth, his wife Melissa and their children Allison and Logan were the recipients of a Deck for a Solider® (D4S) build sponsored by the local Pennsylvania Chapter of NADRA. Melissa had submitted a D4S application to The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) and to her amazement they were chosen! Mike an E-4 Specialist of the 25 Bravo Co., of the 628th Aviation Brigade located in York, Pa., was so excited "this is amazing and now I know what it feels like to receive something I've always wanted," said the overwhelmed solider. Mike is obviously no stranger to giving as he has been active in the Armed Forces since 2001 giving his time and dedication serving overseas in many key military operations serving to our freedom back here in the USA. The American Surveyor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Although prices for construction materials and supplies were 4.5 percent higher in July 2010 than July 2009, prices inched 0.2 percent lower on a monthly basis, according to the Aug. 17 producer price index (PPI) report by the U.S. Labor Department. Softwood lumber prices continued to decline, falling 3.3 percent for the month, although they are still up 10.1 percent from July 2009. Iron and steel prices were down 2.3 percent in July, but still 26 percent higher year over year. More

Green retailing: Oil dependency & the building material supply chain
Building-Products Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a huge environmental calamity, but it should serve as a wake-up call for the LBM supply chain for another reason. Why? The spill will certainly have an impact on local economies and local LBM dealers. But the spill is emblematic of much a bigger issue-the end of cheap oil. And that will shape the future of this industry, bringing tough challenges and green opportunities. More

Used plastic + hemp = lumber
Charlotte Observer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A UNC Charlotte researcher with a passion for sustainability is creating a new building material out of recycled plastic bottles and an ancient grass. Dr. Na Lu, an assistant professor at UNCC's Department of Engineering Technology, has created a material she believes may outperform composite lumber and wood lumber in many uses, and which has potential to be used in the residential and light commercial building industry. In her lab at UNCC, Luna, as she prefers to be called, holds a dog bone-shaped sample of her creation: a beige plastic woven with threads of what looks like horsehair. "Hemp," Luna says, and points to a fluffy pile of the fibers on the table. More

The Epoch Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Technology is truly revolutionizing our everyday habits. Not long ago, we would have laughed at the notion of communicating to friends, family or even businesses via computers or portable devices. Today, it is as ubiquitous as bread in your pantry. With Twitter, Facebook, and other social media, we are seeing an explosion of online usage not just from individuals—but businesses have stepped into the action as well. For those businesses that have a Facebook page or Twitter account, they are the early adopters because they realized the importance of the demographics that they are now interacting with. Just who makes up these active users of social media? More
