Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A report from the U.S. Forest Service found that using wood in building products yielded fewer greenhouse gases than other common building materials, such as concrete and steel. According to the report, which analyzed dozens of peer-reviewed scientific studies, 2.1 tons of greenhouse gases were saved for each ton of carbon in wood products versus non-wood materials. More

Neither idea won strong acceptance among attendees at Principia's conference on decking and outdoor living products, a two-day event that was held in Charlotte, N.C. More

Growth problem on deck could mushroom
Chicago Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mushrooms and fungus can grow on the underside of composite decking because they are feeding on the wood fibers inside the boards. The literature from the manufacturer says the decking does absorb moisture. It would be reasonable to surmise that the wood fibers used in the decking are not treated to prevent wood rot or decay. Reusing building materials part of green remodeling trend
Burlington Free Press    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Reusing building materials isn't a new concept, but the trend in green living has turned salvage hip, with a growing number of consumers who are ready and willing to purchase old doors, windows — even entire floors — for a home remodeling or new construction project. A new book, "Salvage Secrets," published recently, will give people who love poking around antique barns, junk yards, or architectural salvage warehouses plenty of fresh ideas. More

Construction hiring regains some vigor in September
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Last week's mildly positive jobs report was bolstered by better-than-usual hiring in an industry hammered by job losses. Construction firms added 26,000 jobs in September, the most in seven months. The industry trailed only health care, professional and business services, and information in job creation. Overall, U.S. payrolls grew by 103,000 last month, and the unemployment rate held steady at 9.1 percent, the Labor Department said. More

    Owners automate materials management
Constructech    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Given the high cost to construct a project these days, any little help in lowering the price can certainly help. One of the largest expenses on any project is the cost of construction materials, and despite the fact the cost of material prices has come down a bit in the last month, prices still remain high overall compared to year-ago levels. Owner organizations are doing all they can in order to effectively manage prices on projects. More
