Housing starts in US unexpectedly rise to 5-month high
Builders in the U.S. unexpectedly began work on more homes in September, a sign the real estate market is stabilizing at depressed levels. Housing starts rose to a 610,000 annual rate, the most since April and up 0.3 percent from a revised 608,000 rate in August that was higher than previously estimated, Commerce Department figures showed. OSHA cracking down on companies not reporting accidents

Last year the Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced an initiative to crack down on employers that fail to disclose many on-the-job injuries. Recently, the agency moved ahead on the initiative, proposing more than $1.2 million in fines in a case against Houston-based Goodman Manufacturing. Officials say Goodman did not properly report 72 percent of its employee injuries and illnesses over more than two years. More

Poll: Consumer spending hits two-year low

A new Gallup poll shows that lower- and middle-income Americans spent an average of $48 per day in September, a $16 drop since July and the lowest level since the organization began tracking the issue in January 2008. For Americans earning less than $90,000 a year, consumer spending peaked at $105 in May 2008 and then declined to a daily average of $79 in December of that year. Since 2008, daily consumer spending for these wage earners has not risen above $64 for any month. More
Failure to promote recycling nationally slows the greening of Canada's construction industry

The Canadian construction industry took a giant leap forward in environmentally responsible practices with the first application here in 2003 of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building rating system, which rates building projects on their sustainability. But while new homes and buildings are becoming more sustainable, the construction industry appears to have stalled in reducing its waste. Environment Canada estimates that the construction, renovation and demolition (CRD) sector is responsible for up to 33 percent of solid waste — 11 million tons of CRD waste is being sent to landfills annually. Small businesses not thrilled with big banks

Small business owners are less than pleased with their relationships with their banks, especially big banks, according to a study from consumer satisfaction research firm, J.D. Power and Associates. Main Street businesses' overall satisfaction with and loyalty to their banks is declining, according to the U.S. Small Business Banking Satisfaction Study released Thursday. Satisfaction is now at 711 on a 1,000-point scale, down from 718 in 2009. What's more, small businesses are the least satisfied of the financial services customers J.D. Power surveyed. More
