Letter from the NADRA Codes and Standards Committee Chair
NADRA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dear Members and Industry:

The week of Oct. 24, I attended the International Code Council (ICC) Conference on NADRA's behalf.

While at the Conference, I participated in a meeting of the ICC Evaluation Service Advisory Committee (ESAC). ESAC is charged with improving service to manufacturers seeking Evaluation Service Reports (ESR). Please see for a more in-depth discussion of the purpose of ESAC.

The committee is open to participation from members of industry and manufacturers. What struck me as most important was an earnest effort on the part of all participants to move toward resolution and improvement. I was able to meet several vice presidents of ICC-ES as well as manufacturer and industry representatives.

Associations and the Code, a letter from Andy Engel - Editor of Professional Deck Builder Magazine
NADRA Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
When I was a carpenter and a builder, I never joined an industry association. I didn't see what was in it for me. That was taking the short view. I didn't realize that associations lobby on industry-wide issues such as codes. In fact, I didn't know how codes were written. If I had thought about it, I'd have guessed that some think tank of structural engineers sat around developing minimum standards based on a reasonable expectation of building performance. More

Phoenix Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Arizona and Texas added the most construction jobs between September and October while Florida and Minnesota landed on the losing end. That's according to the Associated General Contractors of America, which reports that the industry gained jobs in 29 states in the month-to-month tally. Why leaders should try to be overwhelmed
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The perfect ingredient to draw out leadership is exactly the one most of us, including leaders, fight so hard to avoid: overwhelm. Leaders like to be in control. They want things to turn out right and they feel — often mistakenly — that if they have control over them, they will. More

Glint of hope in small business survey
Arizona Daily Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There was a tiny sign of hope in a monthly survey of small business owners recently, one that could mean they're getting ready to hire. But that doesn't mean economists expect a big shift upward in the job market, and in turn, the rest of the economy, anytime soon. More

Money is available for small businesses, but it takes work
USA TODAY    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Steve Strauss writes, "Yes, it is true that there are more SBA loan funds available right now than in years past. This is mainly due to a change in administrations, and the fact that both TARP and the new small business law added funding for SBA lending." More
