Atlanta-area Army Reserve soldier wins new deck
DVIDS
When Sgt. 1st Class Anthony Florence answered his phone around noon on Nov. 20, he was asked if he could be home by 5 p.m. for a ribbon cutting ceremony.
“I was notified I won a new deck in September and at first, I thought it was a joke,” said Florence. “But then a large amount of supplies were dropped off in my driveway the Wednesday night before the build. I thought it would take two days, but then I received a call and was told to come by as they were just about finished.”
New home sales sluggish in October as housing market slows
Forbes
Sales of newly-constructed single-family homes ticked up just 0.7 percent in October from September, a rather flat result underlining the fact that the housing market is slowing down.
October sales of new single-family homes reached an annual, seasonally-adjusted rate of 458,000, according to data released by the Commerce Department.

Growth in renovation industry spurs employment
By Archita Datta Majumdar
The U.S. construction industry is on an upward swing, which has led to record employment figures. Construction and renovation firms have added 20,000 jobs this year, reaching a five-year high in August, according to the Associated General Contractors of America. This accelerated employment growth was the largest since 2006, with residential building and specialty trade contractors adding a maximum number of employees at 5.7 percent. Continued recovery in the construction sector also means that the number of workers looking for work is steadily falling.

The anti-Facebook revolution begins
By Emma Fitzpatrick
Princeton researchers recently made a prediction that Facebook will lose 80 percent of its users between 2015 and 2017. With 2015 rapidly approaching, the anti-Facebook sentiments remain: too many ads, not enough organic reach, and too many complaints about the ever-changing privacy policy. Still, the social king can't be dethroned without revolutionaries — though a few contenders may have emerged. Recently, two new social platforms jumped onto the scene and are slowly but surely gaining traction. Say hello to Ello and tsu.
Free marketing tools for your business
Pulse
As a small business owner, you are likely a bootstrapping leader juggling multiple priorities. One day you act as an accountant or an operations manager, and the next as a digital marketer. Limited manpower, budget and time can cause massive roadblocks for small business owners, but with the right tools you can maximize your marketing efforts and come out on top.
Want the competitive advantage? Make your business known for something
AllBusiness.com via FoxBusiness
We are in the “specialization age” and for an entrepreneur and small business owner, that’s good news. But some business owners want to target the largest market possible. These entrepreneurs view the specialization concept and the focusing on narrower targets as being too risky, as limiting their potential to capture a larger market.
Admit it: You have no marketing budget
Bloomberg Businessweek
It’s a dirty little secret of small business. If you run a small company, you know what I’m talking about: You don’t really have a marketing budget.
It’s OK. You don’t have to admit it to anybody but yourself. Very few small businesses have a formal, consistent marketing line item on their budget. If they do, they fail to base that number on a solid rationale, considering what’s normal in their industry, how much their competitors spend, and other relevant factors.
