Legislative Progress: Your Voices Matter
The work of gifted education advocates from across the country is evident in the flurry of activity for gifted students on Capitol Hill. With the July 4 Congressional "recess" coming up shortly, now is a great time to reach out to your Members of Congress at home to build even more support.
Here is what is happening on the Hill, thanks to your advocacy efforts:
Both the House and Senate education committees met to consider the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Although the two bills differ greatly in framing the role of the federal government in education, gifted students are represented in both bills.
NAGC News: Cast Your Ballot by July 19
Individual NAGC members have received an email that provides a link to an electronic ballot. It invites you to choose the NAGC President Elect. You also have a chance to vote for Network Leaders within those networks to which you belong. All voting needs to be complete by July 19. If you are an individual member and have not received your ballot, please send an email to Rachel Coleman.

Step Up and Take Part
NAGC members are encouraged to learn more about the work of our 11 standing committees. NAGC's committees and task forces accomplish important work in many content areas. Consider applying to join an NAGC Committee. Current committee members must also indicate their continuing interest by applying. As a committee member, you will devote time, energy, and ideas to lead NAGC projects and programs forward, and in turn, lead the field in supporting wide-ranging efforts on behalf of gifted children. You would be appointed to a one-, two-, or three-year term. Your involvement makes a world of difference. Applications are due by July 12.
Get Your Group On!
To those who follow Internet deals the term "Group On" has taken on a new meaning, but it still works for the NAGC 60th Convention. Did you know that when you gather together 10 or more individuals for the NAGC Convention you can save 10 percent? Think about the power of the group as you can conquer the hundreds of content-rich sessions to maximize your learning! The NAGC Convention is the largest annual event devoted to gifted education. It's your opportunity to brush up on a little-known subject area, or reinforce your skills and knowledge in another.
Full information is available online, and registrations are coming in! Share the love — and the learning — and register as part of a group. The deadline for group registration discounts is Sept. 21. Plan Ahead. Prepare to Learn.
Whether or not you've registered for Convention, you can browse the online schedule and start planning your itinerary. The NAGC Itinerary Planner is a tool to make it easy for you to prioritize your time at Convention. What it's not is a registration tool or a guaranteed seat in the class. You will want to select "Event Details" to register.
By clicking on the star to the right of a session, event, or exhibitor, you can add it to your plan. And you can just as easily remove it from your plan by clicking on the star in "My Plan."
Finding a Program or Advocating for One that Works
Whether you are a teacher or parent, it can be a challenge to find a program to meet a gifted child’s needs. Educators who are just becoming aware and interested in the needs of gifted children or looking to stave off cuts to their gifted programs may not know if they have school or district support. Parents can feel they don’t have the information they need to encourage their school to provide an appropriate education for their children. In this issue of Connecting for High Potential, teachers and parents learn there are many ways you can think critically and plan creatively to share information with key stakeholder to effect changes in programs and services to benefit exceptional learners.
Connecting for High Potential is designed to provide practical advice to parents, teachers, and community members as they work together to support high-ability learners in educational settings. NAGC members have exclusive access to this new issue of CHP, as well as all past issues. They are meant to be shared, though, so please print and share!

Regular and semi-regular readers of this blog have probably noticed over the years that for my middle and high school gifted students, I offer a class ("Advanced Studies") through which they can pursue self-selected, self-directed, independent learning projects and other opportunities, writes Tamara Fisher, a K-12 gifted education specialist. … It's an amazing process to see the kids undergo, in part because it requires them to make decisions they haven't had to make before (because typically the teacher has always been making those decisions).
