In response to the California Attorney General's rulemaking process to implement the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the News Media Alliance on Friday submitted written comments with the Attorney General regarding the CCPA and its effect on news publishers. "The news media industry supports the intent of the California privacy bill to provide transparency and control to consumers over their data," stated Alliance President & CEO David Chavern. "In these comments, we propose clarifications and interpretations that would reflect the intent to curb those behaviors while not affecting the ability to sustain quality journalism."

While the Alliance works hard to stay on top of changes impacting the news industry, we wanted to better understand what our member organizations see as the top issues and trends. To promote an ongoing dialogue with members, we've created an opportunity for members to share their opinions with us and help us plan for the future by becoming Alliance Insiders. To kick off the program, we asked the Insiders what they see as the biggest issues likely to shape 2019, as well as what they're most looking forward to this year.

The Philadelphia Inquirer got an idea from the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune — focus on the good stuff, too. In April, the Inquirer will launch a new Sunday print section (yes, you read that correctly) that focuses on the solutions, stories and people making the region better.

The Guardian is seeing its investment in podcasts pay off, buoyed by a new daily show that it's using to increase ad revenue, but also drive people to its membership program.
Last November, the publisher launched a 25-minute daily news podcast "Today in Focus," which has become one of its most popular shows, accounting for a quarter of all total listens. Average daily listens for the show have grown fivefold since launching, based on first-week listens compared to last week's listens.

Microtransactions have been a standard monetization technique in the video game industry for some time now as a way to entice consumers to purchase add-on content at low prices.
Newsrooms have since pondered whether this would work as a way to increase cash flow, or roping readers into memberships or subscriptions. Some early adopters have used microtransactions as part of a blended strategy to fight ad-blocking.

Forgive me for harping on again about ad fraud, but it seems the war against this industry-wide issue is unwinnable.
MediaPost's Laurie Sullivan wrote about the current state of ad fraud this week: "About three-quarters of U.S. fraudulent advertising traffic is 'sophisticated' invalid traffic, according to data released Tuesday. Looking at IP and blacklists no longer works, said Guy Tytunovich, CHEQ founder-CEO, and a former Israeli military intelligence officer."

IPTC
The International Press Telecommunications Council's (IPTC) photo metadata standard, first developed in the 1990s, is the most widely-used metadata standard used by news publishers and others to add metadata to the photos they publish (subject matter, photographer, copyright, etc.). In October 2018, Google announced that it had been working with IPTC and another organization to include some rights-related metadata in Google Images. However, only 15 percent of images published online have any metadata (and only 3 percent have copyright information embedded). IPTC is therefore conducting a survey to determine whether and how news publishers use the IPTC Photo Metadata Standard. Click here to take the survey.
