News Media Alliance
The News Media Alliance commends the U.S. Copyright Office for its comprehensive report on Section 512 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. We are pleased to notice that the report acknowledges that the intended balance of the safe harbor system created by Section 512 is currently “askew” and that the system might facilitate at least some activities and service providers that Congress did not intend to protect.

Nieman Lab
As local U.S. newsrooms approach at least three months of covering the coronavirus pandemic and its impact from home, they’ve also had to adapt to their audiences’ needs and interests. Thanks to COVID-19, Local News Will Never Be the Same. And It Shouldn't Be
Reynolds Journalism Institute
The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted our routines, transformed our social interactions and redefined our relationships. Yet, as odd as it sounds, we’ll likely come to appreciate some of the changes this crisis wrought. Panic has a knack for dislodging lethargy. In local news, this lethargy — in the form of a steadily declining but still significant ad base — was dislodged in sudden, brutal fashion, leading to the shuttering of hundreds of publications and the layoffs or furloughs of thousands of journalists.

The Danger of 'Misinformation, Disinformation, Delusions, and Deceit'
The Harvard Gazette
Washington Post executive editor Martin Baron offered a ringing defense of facts and the truth on Thursday, telling Harvard seniors who tuned in to an online graduation program for the Class of 2020 that the current coronavirus pandemic has not only underscored the value of accurate, authoritative information but has shown that lies and misinformation can be deadly. “Only a few months ago, I would have settled for emphasizing that our democracy depends on facts and truth, and it surely does,” Baron said. “But now, as we can plainly see, it is more elemental than that."

IAB: Digital Ad Spending Rises 16%, But CPMs Fall 16%
MediaPost
First-quarter 2020 showed year-on-year advertising growth despite the impact of COVID-19 beginning in March — but the pandemic did create significant pricing pressure on CPMs, with digital falling 16%. The industry remained relatively resilient in the first quarter of 2020. “The growth, about 12%, declined from 16% for the full year, but we think there was some slowing overall, excluding COVID-19,” said David Cohen, President of the IAB.

Opinion: Keywords No Longer Make the Marketing World Go Round
AdAge
Search evolves quickly, and that’s made evident by the coronavirus’ effect on queries. People are looking for critical information that answers highly specific questions, such as “How can oil prices go negative?” and “Where’s my stimulus check?” Thankfully, Google’s October 2019 search advancement, BERT — for bidirectional encoder representations from transformers — adeptly interprets search queries posed as questions and delivers applicable results.

Fact-Checkers Support Twitter Labels, But More Than That, They Want Transparency
Poynter
Most U.S. fact-checkers supported Twitter’s effort to label President Donald Trump’s tweets on mail-in balloting, but all agree the social media company needed to be transparent about its process. Last week, Twitter added “Get the facts…” labels to two of the president’s tweets alleging mail-in balloting invites fraud. In an emailed statement, a company spokesperson said the tweets contained, “potentially misleading information about voting processes and have been labeled to provide additional context around mail-in ballots.”
