Featured Editorial: Bring Down Symbols of Hate
Boulder Daily Camera
By The Denver Post — If Americans are going to live up to the ideals — equality and basic human rights — put forward by the men who pushed aside monarchy in favor of self-governance 244 years ago, we must be as open to change as our founding fathers were in their time. The death of George Floyd and the ensuing avalanche of video evidence of police misconduct illustrated that our institutions need dramatic change to expel racism and incompetence. That will take time and effort. But in almost every city in America there are small steps that can be taken to immediately show that willingness to change.

California Subscription Bill Is Unnecessary, Ignores Recent Voluntary Efforts
News Media Alliance
In early June, the California State Assembly approved legislation that would make it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions involving free trials and introductory offers. The legislation, AB 2811, sponsored by Assemblyman Marc Berman (D-Palo Alto), was approved on a 63-0 vote, but would still need to be approved by the California Senate before the end of the legislative session on August 31 to become law. The legislation amends a 2018 California law that requires merchants to provide a notice of the terms and conditions of an automatic renewal and options for cancellation, which consumers can review and approve.

Give Local Journalism a Fighting Chance by Creating a Demand for It
Poynter
Local newspaper reporters who doggedly attend school board, planning commission and city council meetings and who scan police blotters and pore over budgets and contracts are essential cogs in our communities. They serve as the eyes and ears of the public and play a critical role as watchdogs for waste, fraud and abuse and holding officials accountable. I know this firsthand: I began what became a nearly three-decade journalism career playing this role in Colonie, New York, and later in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Local News is Playing an Important Role for Americans During COVID-19 Outbreak
Pew Research Center
The COVID-19 outbreak has been a major national news story, dominating news consumption and prompting frequent presidential press conferences. But it is also an important local news story, with many Americans depending on their local media outlets for information about the outbreak. In an April survey by Pew Research Center, conducted as part of the American News Pathways project, about six-in-ten Americans (61%) said they were following news about the coronavirus outbreak at both the national and local level equally.

How to Amplify the Voice of Women in Newsrooms in a Post-COVID World
WAN-IFRA
“During COVID-19 we are proving the case that a lot of women have thought all along – that remote workspaces, being outside of the newsroom, working on schedules that work for us and for our families – are fully effective,” says Emily Ramshaw, co-founder and CEO of The 19th. “I think this moment is, I hope, going to prove to everyone that we know best and we can manage our schedules and our lives and still produce extraordinary products without being tethered to a chair in a newsroom,” she said during WAN-IFRA’s recent World Media Leaders eSummit.

CNN Sharpens Its Contextual Tool for the Brand Safety Fight
Digiday
CNN has moved to improve its contextual ad tool in order to yield better returns for its advertisers and, in turn, drive more revenue. The news giant is the latest publisher rushing to tackle rudimentary blanket keyword blocklists as the default way that advertisers manage brand safety and brand suitability. The goal: Unlock blocked inventory, generate more revenue and increase the relevance of ads next to content, in theory driving up campaign performance.

Back from the Brink - Mom & Pop Shops
Promoted by Brand-X-Mobile
The small business audience is scared, financially strapped, and more connected than ever before. The real heroes here are Marketers, Media and Technology. We can bring small business back from the brink. The effort needs to be a strategic partnership of all three services properly deployed and in some cases deferring costs throughout the re-opening phases. How Publishers Can Benefit From Facebook Boycott
MediaPost
This month's advertiser boycott of Facebook has dominated news about the media and marketing industries for the past couple of weeks. For publishers, it's an opportunity to tout the advantages they offer to advertisers that fret about brand safety. And marketers should worry about brand safety, with surveys showing how consumers can form a negative opinion about brands whose ads appear among undesirable content.

Ad Age
Last month, Ad Age gathered veteran and rising creative leaders for our "Future of Creativity" event, in which we explored how the industry can move forward in the face of the ongoing pandemic and racial unrest around the world. For good reason, many of the conversations gravitated toward how the industry can truly tackle social inequity and systemic racism in its own ranks, having seen little in the way of real progress despite years of efforts and initiatives.

How the Coronavirus Pandemic is Changing Social Media
Reuters Institute
“War is the locomotive of history,” said Leon Trotsky in 1922, arguing that social developments that would normally unfold over decades can take place in months when conflict is raging. The coronavirus pandemic is similar in nature, bringing about radical changes to almost every field of human existence in an unusually short space of time. Could We Fight Misinformation With Blockchain Technology?
The New York Times
When a news photo makes its journey from a camera to publication, it passes through many devices, technologies and people. Each step in this journey is designed to ensure the truthfulness and accuracy of the person or event depicted in the photo. However, once the photo makes it to the internet, it can end up anywhere in a matter of minutes — sometimes without its original context or with purposely misleading information.
