Provision in deficit proposal could affect use of independent contractors

President Obama included a provision in his Deficit Reduction/American Jobs Act that would repeal Section 530 of the Internal Revenue Code, which provides employers with protection against retroactive and prospective Internal Revenue Service reclassification of workers from independent contractors to employees. In addition, the administration's proposal would direct the IRS to rewrite worker classification rules. Given the proposal's impact on newspapers' use of independent contractors, NAA is working to convince policymakers that it would pose significant problems for newspapers and cause harm to the economy. More

Foundation offers fellowships for leadership development

Up to 15 fellowships are available for PowerMind, a leadership development opportunity from the NAA Foundation for ethnic minority managers. Starting in January, this six-month program involves monthly webinars on topics such as leadership, personal branding, networking, managing up and career strategizing. Fellows participate in conference calls on webinar topics, confer with their advisers (senior industry executives) and complete assignments. They also attend the NAA mediaXchange conference, scheduled for April 2-5 in Washington, D.C. There is no cost to participate in PowerMind. Deadline to apply is Nov. 4. More

Retail sales rise strongly in September on autos

U.S. consumers stepped up their spending on retail goods in September, a hopeful sign for the sluggish economy. They spent more on autos, clothing and furniture last month to boost retail sales 1.1 percent, the Commerce Department said. It was the largest gain in seven months. More

Spending in Hispanic media increases to $4.3 billion

Spending in Hispanic media rose 14 percent to $4.3 billion in 2010, according to a new study by the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies. The 14 percent gain nearly reversed a two-year slowdown in Hispanic ad spending, but Hispanic media's share of overall spending slipped slightly to 5 percent, from 5.4 percent. More

Global online TV and video revenues will grow five times their current size to reach $21.52 billion in 2016 from $3.48 billion in 2010, according to London-based media research company Digital TV Research. One big mover will be so-called "Over-The-Top" alternative TV/video providers that use the Internet to act like terrestrial cable operators and/or satellite programming services. More
