![]() Public Policy Provision in deficit proposal could affect use of independent contractors Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() President Obama included a provision in his Deficit Reduction/American Jobs Act that would repeal Section 530 of the Internal Revenue Code, which provides employers with protection against retroactive and prospective Internal Revenue Service reclassification of workers from independent contractors to employees. In addition, the administration's proposal would direct the IRS to rewrite worker classification rules. Given the proposal's impact on newspapers' use of independent contractors, NAA is working to convince policymakers that it would pose significant problems for newspapers and cause harm to the economy. Grants Foundation offers fellowships for leadership development Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Up to 15 fellowships are available for PowerMind, a leadership development opportunity from the NAA Foundation for ethnic minority managers. Starting in January, this six-month program involves monthly webinars on topics such as leadership, personal branding, networking, managing up and career strategizing. Fellows participate in conference calls on webinar topics, confer with their advisers (senior industry executives) and complete assignments. They also attend the NAA mediaXchange conference, scheduled for April 2-5 in Washington, D.C. There is no cost to participate in PowerMind. Deadline to apply is Nov. 4. The 14 percent gain nearly reversed a two-year slowdown in Hispanic ad spending, but Hispanic media's share of overall spending slipped slightly to 5 percent, from 5.4 percent.
