Public Policy Estate tax compromise approved For years, NAA has advocated for a compromise solution for the estate tax that would allow owners of independent newspapers to pass along their businesses to the next generation. The U.S. House of Representatives passed and President Obama signed the tax/economic stimulus package last week. In addition to a two-year extension of the Bush-era 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, the legislation establishes a federal estate tax top rate of 35 percent, with an individual exemption set at $5 million for 2011 and 2012. This is a significant improvement over a House bill approved earlier this year that would have permanently extended the 2009 tax rate of 45 percent and a $3.5 million exemption. NAA is extremely pleased with the result and wishes to thank all of you who were so instrumental in urging Congress to pass this legislation.
