Earlier this month, Google made a move many in the news industry have anticipated for years: the internet giant ended their first-click-free program that allowed users to read paywalled news items for free, if accessed through the search engine. The move comes only months after The Wall Street Journal pulled out of the program, declaring the program unfair to paid news outlets. Now, Google has agreed to work with news organizations that keep their content behind a paywall, and paid news sites are set to reap the benefits.

Instagram has over 700 million monthly users and three times more engagement than its parent company, Facebook. Celebrities using the platform have tens of millions of followers; brands that are on it receive hundreds of thousands of likes. Despite seeing 424 percent year-to-year growth in engagement, the largest engagement increase of any platform, less than 40 percent of newspapers are on Instagram. So, what's stopping newspapers from hopping on the platform's bandwagon? Here are a couple things that could be holding them back.

A bi-partisan group of the House of Representatives on September 18 asked the International Trade Commission (ITC) to deny a petition filed by the North Pacific Paper Company (Norpac) that requests antidumping and/or countervailing duties of over 50 percent on newsprint imported from Canada. The bipartisan letter, led by Representatives Chuck Fleischmann (R-Chattanooga, TN) and Jamie Raskin (D-Rockville, MD), argued that a well-documented shift from printed newspapers to digital alternatives has caused a dramatic decline in newsprint consumption. And, that this trade dispute, brought on my one mill with 400 employees, could put at risk 175,000 jobs in the newspaper industry.

On Friday, the News Media Alliance filed comments in response to the UK Culture, Media & Sports Committee inquiry into "'fake news': the growing phenomenon of widespread dissemination, through social media and the internet, and acceptance as fact of stories of uncertain provenance or accuracy." The filing focuses on the solutions to the fake news phenomenon, from the perspective of our members who invest a tremendous amount of time and resources to ensure the accuracy of news content, and adhere to long-standing and voluntary standards in the journalism profession.

She has always wanted to run her own event company. The Alliance Rising Star Award recipient came on to GateHouse Live in its beginning days. "It squashed the goal, because we kind of did start it. It's not my company, but we're starting it from scratch and putting blood, sweat and tears into it."
