11. The Washington Times gives back to the community with news racks
From July 9: The Washington Times had hundreds of extra news racks lying around with few options for their continued use. There did not appear to be many alternate uses for a news rack. Or so it would seem, because Doug Alexander, president of the Newspaper in Education Institute and educational services manager of the Washington Times had an idea — repurposing Washington Times news racks as Little Free Libraries.
12. How FB Newswire from Facebook can enhance newsgathering
From May 21: A new resource from Facebook is giving journalists something to write about. On April 24, the online social networking service announced FB Newswire, a resource that helps journalists find, share and embed newsworthy content. FB Newswire aggregates content shared publicly on Facebook by individuals and organizations from around the world. The content includes photos, status updates and videos.
13. Why 2014 will showcase the bright future of the newspaper industry
From Jan. 3: During a time when all media are transforming and experimenting with yet another wave of digital nuances and advanced technology, growth is something most businesses only hope to achieve. Despite overstated cynics, the newspaper industry has seen growth in virtually all endeavors. Looking back at the biggest accomplishments in 2013, it is easy to survey the tremendous success as well as the potential for 2014.
14. Shifting metrics of newspaper success: An inside view
From April 16: Anybody that works at a newspaper enjoys a local success story about capturing the excitement of a local sports team that wins it all. It’s about everybody pulling together and working to achieve measurable success covering the big story. It reminds us what being part of a newspaper is all about. Of course, nobody appreciates the satisfaction more than those with a circulation or audience title.

VoicePort LLC
In today business environments a business must invest in mobile applications to retain and access customers. Companies must consider costs of development and initial release of a mobile application. They must also allow for sometimes-expensive maintenance to fix bugs and tweaking the app to meet consumer preference and functions.
VoicePort has developed CircPort Mobile to address the above business considerations and provide newspapers with a powerful Circulation Customer service application for the newspaper industry.
16. What does mobile mean for the newspaper industry?
From Jan. 15: Is mobile the future of journalism? It is certainly one of the industry’s biggest buzzwords. Pew reports that 56 percent of U.S. adults own smartphones, and 34 percent own tablets. As mobile sales continue to skyrocket and new research on use and behaviors is revealed, it becomes crystal clear that there is great promise in leveraging mobile platforms for the newspaper industry.
17. Readers to decide future of print news products
From April 2: Newspaper executives believe that the future of print media is out of their hands. Larry Kramer, publisher of USA Today, said he could not begin to predict what effects new technologies and consumer preferences may have on newspapers’ print products next. Consumers, Kramer said, will decide the role of print in future news ecosystems. “We’re not going to tell them when to stop using [print] newspapers,” Kramer said of newspaper executives like himself and readers. “They’re going to tell us, and they have all the time in the world.”
18. Navigating the way forward for the newspaper industry
From March 12: The newspaper industry has momentum and it will guide the way forward. Newspaper digital readership hit a record high. Mobile readership soared. Circulation revenue grew for the first time in 10 years. Brilliant investors chose to focus on newspapers to expand their portfolios. Interactive article experiences were piloted. New innovations led to reconstructed business models and increased revenue streams. There is a palpable sense of excitement and energy that permeates through discussions with publishers, executives and board members.
