Pension backlog dwindles despite retirement surge

The Office of Personnel Management's effort to fix its long-standing pension processing backlog is progressing faster than expected — even though many more feds have been retiring than expected. Roth TSP rollout delayed for DoD, other agencies

The Roth option for the Thrift Savings Plan, which was announced the week of April 9, will be delayed for employees in the Defense Department and other agencies. The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board recently announced that the Roth option, which taxes retirement contributions before they are put into savings rather than when they are withdrawn, would be available May 7. In the wake of the conference scandal at the General Services Administration, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has expanded the Oversight and Government Reform Committee's probe into wasteful spending to all government agencies. In letters to the heads of 23 departments and agencies, Issa asked for conference records for the last seven years. In a letter addressed to Attorney General Eric Holder, Issa requested a list of all overnight conferences funded by the department and attended by more than 50 employees since Jan. 1, 2005. More

More than half of U.S. workers are consistently carrying balances on credit cards and are worried about not having enough in savings to pay for unexpected expenses, according to the PwC 2012 Financial Wellness Survey. The survey indicated that a third of workers are not currently saving for retirement and more than half expect to delay their retirement. With the first of the baby boomer generation now entering retirement, these results highlight a need for workers to quickly reassess their expenses, savings rates and retirement strategy if they are to enjoy their golden years in comfort.
