There are roughly 400 sports commissions in the United States. Of those, only three presidents are women. The Kansas City Sports Commission is a privately-funded nonprofit that began in 1966. Today, it's still in good hands with Kathy Nelson. Nelson is more than your average sports fan in Kansas City. She's the city's biggest cheerleader as the president and CEO of the sports commission.

NASC Sports Legacy Fund to benefit Oklahoma Cleats for Kids

The Sports Legacy Fund, originally developed by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission as an equipment donation program as a way for members of the sports tourism community to make a personal and lasting impact on the lives of underprivileged youth sports programs throughout the country. This year's annual fundraiser includes a raffle and silent auction and will benefit Oklahoma Cleats for Kids, a not-for-profit, 501(c)3, that recycles and distributes new and gently used athletic shoes and equipment to kids in need.

Athletes, fans set for Russia's Winter Olympics spectacle

After all the consternation over security, the controversy over gay rights and the ridicule over poor preparations, the Sochi Games are here. The last of the athletes are arriving, including the bulk of Team USA. Qualification events have begun in the men's and ladies' slopestyle, while the ladies' moguls and team figure skating contests start later. And Dmitry Chernyshenko, head of the Games, is promising Sochi will be "the safest place on Earth during the Olympics."
Sports help Tennessee hotel sales increase by $6 million

A recent report by Smith Travel Research indicates Rutherford County, Tenn., had a $6 million increase in revenue on hotel rooms sold last year. Barbara Wolke, interim vice president of the Rutherford County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the increase has largely to do with travel sports, such as soccer and softball tournaments.
'Jackass' sports may be the future

Longtime NBC Sports anchor Bob Costas caused a bit of a stir in January when, as he was asked about the new winter Olympic sport of Slopestyle, called it "Jackass stuff." Now, he wasn't throwing out a slur, but instead he was making a reference to the Johnny Knoxville "Jackass" movies, where people do unconventional stunts and sometimes (well, most of the time) fall on their faces.

The need for connectivity in sports venues is growing as mobile device usage has become as common as the over-consumption of beer, but carriers' interest in being the connectivity providers is starting to wane. Sports venues used to be a prime market for carrier Wi-Fi deployments, until the business case started to get murky. Whereas carriers used to write off stadium deployments as the cost of doing business, now they are losing interest.
Round Rock's new sports center opens smoothly

A new state-of-the-art sports facility has opened in Round Rock, Texas, and is expected to be one of the biggest draws for tourism in the city. The Round Rock Sports Center unofficially opened Jan. 18 at 2400 Chisholm Trail Drive, and was swarmed with more than 1,000 people for the Austin Juniors Volleyball Club's Tour of Texas Tournament, which was also held at locations in San Antonio and Austin. An official grand opening will take place Jan. 28.

The inaugural Saratoga Frozen Springs Classic is bringing together hockey players at Saratoga Spa State Park in New York for a three-day pond hockey tournament that will kick off Saratoga's annual Winterfest. Saratoga Convention and Tourism teamed up with Townsquare Lifestyle Events and title sponsor Labatt Blue to put on the four-on-four, round-robin style tournament in hopes of boosting tourism during the slower part of the year.
San Diego vying to host 2024 Olympics

Ten years from now, San Diego could be the home of the Summer Olympics. If you asked Vincent Mudd, the chair of San Diego's Exploratory Committee, about the city's chances of making the short list of U.S. cities selected to host the 2024 Summer Games, his answer would be simple: "We're looking very, very good at 2024."
Rugby tournament is major international draw

More than 70,000 fans are gathering at Sam Boyd Stadium to watch the Las Vegas leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series, and 35 percent of them are international visitors. While 16 nations' seven-man teams are playing, fans and cheerleaders will share their cultural traditions with Las Vegas, all in the name of bringing a party to the pitch.

Atlanta 7s boost for grassroots game in USA

The IRB Women's Sevens World Series is headed for Atlanta's Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University on Feb. 15-16. Atlanta 7s will be the largest international sporting event in the state of Georgia since the Games of the XXVI Olympiad in Atlanta, which sold more than 8.3 million tickets in 1996.
