The interprofessional health care model has been identified as a means to overcome health disparities among populations of color and to reduce health care workforce shortages. As policy makers and health care organizations continue to move toward interprofessional collaboration as a solution to these issues, the social worker on the team will gain stature as the linchpin of the team because of their unique skill sets and perspective of holistic healing. NASW, the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) are committed to addressing both pandemics—COVID-19 and systemic racism, both of which disproportionately affect people of color.
NASW President Mit Joyner, DPS, MSW, LCSW, reflects on social work's next moves, affirming it is the duty of all social workers to fight for vulnerable populations, to ensure all people are treated with dignity and respect.
NASW seeks to dismantle racist policing and supports the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020 (H.R. 7120) from social worker Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) that passed in the U.S. House. We urge the Senate to follow the lead of the House. NASW also implores Congress and state, county, and local governments to reallocate and reinvest resources from law enforcement into mental health, living-wage jobs, affordable housing, and alternatives for anti-racist public safety services.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (H.R. 7120) in June. It is now crucial that the Senate enact similarly strong and comprehensive legislation to transform policing. Senate legislation must ban chokeholds, no-knock warrants, and other lethal practices that are applied without justification and disproportionately to Black and Brown people. Send a customizable prewritten email urging your Senator to pass this legislation.
The Grand Challenges for Social Work, led by the American Academy of Social Work & Social Welfare (AASWSW), is an initiative to champion social progress powered by science. In June 2020 the Grand Challenges leadership team added a 13th Grand Challenge: Eliminate Racism. Our profession must lead the way in identifying research and interventions to address racism. NASW's CEO, Angelo McClain, PhD, LICSW, is proud to serve on the Grand Challenges Leadership Board, and to ensure NASW provides social workers with tools and resources to respond to the Grand Challenges for Social Work.

| SOCIAL WORK ISSUES IN THE NEWS |
Health Affairs
In the United States, significant health disparities exist along the axes of age, sex/gender, and race/ethnicity, reflected in the distribution of chronic and life-threatening conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Preliminary data suggest this is also the case with the COVID-19 pandemic: mortality rates seem to be higher among men compared to women, and higher among Black and Latinx Americans compared to White Americans.

The ZIP code that covers much of San Diego's City Heights neighborhood is seeing a higher rate of coronavirus cases than San Diego County, and it's a similar situation in Southeast San Diego.
These communities, that have larger Black and Hispanic populations than the region, are where the nearly century-old and now illegal practice of redlining occurred—when a government-backed body marked maps of predominantly minority communities in red and labeled them a poor financial investment.
