National Athletic Training Month comes to a close this week, and it's time to enter the PR Contest. Winners receive a $150 gift certificate for NATA logo merchandise. Entries are limited to PR efforts for the 2010 National Athletic Training Month only, and you must be an NATA member to win. New this year: All entries must be submitted online. The Ethnic Diversity Advisory Committee is issuing a call for abstracts for poster presentations at the 2010 Annual Meeting. The posters will be presented during the EDAC Town Hall on the evening of Thursday, June 24. Proposal Would Educate Coaches About Concussions

A legislative proposal aims to put training and education in place that prepares public school coaches and parents for dealing with possible student-athlete concussions. The House State Affairs Committee unanimously sent the legislation to the House, but on the condition that it can be amended before getting a vote. The bill calls for coaches to immediately remove an athlete from a practice or game if a concussion is expected, with the State Board of Education putting rules in place that outline the steps to medically clear the athlete for a return to sports.  More

Girls' Jump Training Aims to Reduce Risk of Injury

A simple test can determine whether young female athletes are at risk for a painful knee injury, researchers at Allegheny General Hospital have found. Girls are statistically much more likely than boys to experience a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, which attaches to the femur in the upper leg and the tibia in the lower leg to stabilize the knee. About 85 percent of ACL tears are non-contact injuries. They occur primarily during sudden stopping, starting or pivoting motions.  More

Study: Obese Kids Suffer More Leg, Foot Injuries

Obese children are at increased risk for leg and foot injuries, a new study finds. Researchers looked at 23,000 children, ages 3 to 14. The one-sixth of the children who were obese had more leg, foot and ankle injuries than healthy weight children. The study appears in the April issue of the journal Pediatrics More
