West Virginia Governor Signs AT Regulation
from NATA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
West Virginia became the 47th state to regulate athletic trainers when Gov. Joe Manchin III recently signed H.B. 3152. The law requires athletic trainers to register with the state and ends the current 'certification' offered by the state's Board of Education. Though not a licensure law, the statute does provide title protection and requires BOC certification for registration under the Board of Physical Therapy. It also provides for disciplinary action for violating the requirements. The law takes effect June 2010. More

Health Law Side Effect Could Harm Athletes
from Norwich Bulletin    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted in 1996 to protect the privacy and confidentiality of patients' health information. Unfortunately, it has also created a potentially deadly situation in sports medicine. It is imperative that coaches, athletic trainers and team physicians have complete medical information on every athlete. HIPAA has unintentionally created an obstacle to the free exchange of health records.  More

Sudden Death Risk Looms in Triathlons
from Web MD    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Triathletes may aptly be called iron men and women, but a new study shows they aren't invincible. Researchers say at least 14 people have died in triathlons between 2006 and 2008. That equates to a sudden death rate of 1.5 deaths per 100,000 participants, double the rate associated with marathons (0.8 per 100,000). Of the 14 deaths, 13 occurred during the swimming portion of the race and one during the biking portion. Drowning was the declared cause of death in each of the swimming deaths, but seven of nine athletes who had autopsies had cardiovascular abnormalities that may have contributed to their deaths.  More

Ways to Prevent Concussions in Young Athletes
from WHSV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
April is not only the beginning of spring but the start of the spring sports season. It's also a good time to remind coaches and parents of what they can do to prevent concussions in youth athletes and what to do when these injuries occur. To protect young athletes, parents and coaches should know the warning signs of concussion, the recommendations around "return to play" practices, and to assure youth athletes properly use protective equipment, such as helmets. Parents should also be aware of the need to inform coaches of any recent concussion.  More
