JMU Video Featured On Cable TV Show

Students at James Madison University created a video last month about athletic training set to the song "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson. The video gained popularity on YouTube and was passed around other athletic training social media circles. Last week, it reached cable network station G4. Hosts on Attack of the Show don't completely understand the role of an athletic trainer, but they were nice enough to play JMU's clip. Watch the full video!  More

The Bone and Joint Decade is developing a global self-help program that educates people with joint pain on how to use a combination of clinically proven self-help techniques to actively manage their joint pain and improve their quality of life. The organization would like athletic trainers to complete a short questionnaire about joint pain. It’s seven questions and should take about 15 minutes. The Bone and Joint Decade hopes the result of this questionnaire helps define the appropriate core content and delivery concepts for the global program.  More

Big Ten Creating League-wide Concussion
Policy, Educating Athletes on Head Injuries

Athletes at Big Ten schools will be required to sign a waiver after receiving education about concussions, the conference’s medical staffs and athletic trainers have decided. The waiver will explain to athletes they are expected to be open and honest about their symptoms regarding head injuries to aid diagnosis and treatment of concussions.  More

The Florida heat is here and it can be especially dangerous for athletes. A local doctor has developed a new tool to deal with the dangers of heat stroke and possibly save lives and it's being used at Boca Raton High School's spring football practice. This is the football practice you know. The tackling, the physical conditioning, the drills, those are the parts of football practice you know. But at Boca Raton High's spring practice you might not recognize one drill. Athletic Training Education Program Accredited

Less than two years after admitting its first student, Saint Louis University's athletic training education entry-level master's program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. The SLU program is one of 369 CAATE accredited programs nationally and one of only 23 accredited entry-level master's programs in the country. In order to be accredited, a program must first teach and evaluate each course and graduate its first class.  More

Study: Ankle Braces Help Prevent Injuries in Female Athletes

Sports injuries among high school athletes is estimated at a staggering 2 million each year with 500,000 doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ankle sprains are the most common sports related injury and the most common acute injury in volleyball. A recent study published in the April issue of Foot and Ankle International, the official journal of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, evaluates the effect of different types of ankle braces on the incidence of ankle sprains in high school volleyball players. The results show the use of an ankle brace significantly protects ankles from inversion ankle sprains among athletes who had not suffered from a previous injury.  More
