Last week, the New York Times ran a letter from Marje Albohm, MS, ATC, commenting on Pop Warner's announcement of new concussion prevention protocols. The letter voiced support for the measures Pop Warner was taking but went on to outline the other dangers with competition and called for sports facilities to utilize athletic trainers. More

Post-Professional Education to Transition to the CAATE

The NATA Board of Directors approved a joint recommendation of the NATA Executive Committee for Education and the Commission on the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education to transition accreditation services for post-professional athletic training graduate degree programs and residency programs from NATA to the CAATE, effective July 1. This move brings all accreditation services together under the auspices of the CAATE. More

North Carolina High School Program at Risk

The presence of certified athletic trainers at a North Carolina county's 12 public high schools could be ending just 1 1/2 years into the high-profile initiative in Forsyth County. The trainers, who are full-time employees of either Forsyth Medical Center or Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, are assigned to a high school, where they assist coaches and players in practice and games. The two conferences announced a major, co-sponsored research partnership to examine and address concussions and other head injuries among athletes. New Law on Concussions Takes Effect in Kentucky

Kentucky has just become the 38th state to have a concussion safety law for athletes in school. The measure comes as new attention is being focused on the danger of head injuries in sports, particularly football. The new law requires concussion education for coaches and concussion monitoring for potentially injured players. More

Celtics' Lacerte Wins NBA Award

Ed Lacerte has been called the Celtics' MVP, but he was snubbed for the NBA award this season in favor of some guy named LeBron James. Lacerte, the Celtics' head athletic trainer, settled for a different honor when he was named the 2011-12 recipient of the Joe O'Toole Athletic Trainer of the Year Award. The award is given annually to a member of the National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association for exemplary achievement or outstanding service to the NBA, NBATA or his community. More
