Thornton Wins NATA Election

The NATA presidential election ended last Thursday and Clarion University's Jim Thornton, MS, ATC, PES, emerged as the victor. Thornton, an NATA member since 1983, has volunteered in many capacities for the association and most recently served as the District Two representative on the Board of Directors. He was also the Board's vice president from 2009-2011. Thornton will succeed current president Marje Albohm, MS, ATC, next June at the annual meeting in St. Louis. He will become the 12th elected NATA president. A total of 7,134 members voted, which represented 26 percent of the eligible voting membership. The voting turnout was up from the last election in 2007 by a margin of 3 percent. Thanks to everyone who took the time to cast a vote. More

NATA is announcing a new project for ATEP Directors that enhances NATA's image, promotes the profession, earns money for programs and much more. Approved by NATA's Board of Directors and led by past president Chuck Kimmel, LAT, ATC, the project is a collaboration between NATA and, a new Q&A-based health/medical information web site. As a content partner in, NATA is developing Q&A highlighting the expertise of athletic trainers for the general public. NATA is asking for 20 athletic training education programs to volunteer to develop the questions and answers over the next month or so. Don't be left out of this fun project. Learn more here. More

When Tommy Mallon, a player at Santa Fe Christian High School, was injured in a lacrosse match, athletic trainer Riki Kirchhoff, ATC, stepped in and helped along with spectator Dr. Eric Wardrip. The actions of Kirchhoff and Wardrip turned out to be perfect as Mallon had a life-threatening neck injury. This video from the non-profit group Advocates for Injured Athletes, tells the story of how the traumatic injury situation was handled. AIA provides education, resources, and support programs that will help injured athletes thrive. The group seeks to strengthen injury prevention in high school sports by promoting the use of Certified Athletic Trainers. More

As awareness continues to grow about sports-related concussions among student athletes, two New Jersey lawmakers say it's time for schools to start following nationwide protocols governing such injuries. U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez and Rep. Bill Pascrell announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention agreed to study and develop national guidelines for managing sports-related concussions for student athletes. More

How Exercise Can Strengthen the Brain

Can exercise make the brain more fit? That absorbing question inspired a new study at the University of South Carolina during which scientists assembled mice and assigned half to run for an hour a day on little treadmills, while the rest lounged in their cages without exercising. Earlier studies have shown that exercise sparks neurogenesis, or the creation of entirely new brain cells. But the South Carolina scientists were not looking for new cells. They were looking inside existing ones to see if exercise was whipping those cells into shape, similar to the way that exercise strengthens muscle. More

ACL surgery indeed allows athletes to return to the playing field, but those same athletes face a higher risk — up to 8 percent — of reinjuring the repaired ACL. Here's the new problem those athletes face: The second round of ACL repair doesn't bring results equal to the first surgery. The failure rate on the second ACL repair can be as high as 14 percent.
