Athletic Trainers Hurt By Budget Cuts
from WCPO-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Shortly after kids learn to walk, some of them hit the field. When student athletes reach the high school level the injury potential grows ten fold. The economy is forcing some schools to cut athletic trainers. "When it comes to our children, that's not where you cut corners...and that's not where you save dollars. You've got to find it somewhere else," said athletic trainer Tanya Dargusch. More

Impact of Concussions Extends Beyond Athletics
from The Denver Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Courtney Camden lay on a soccer field in Monument, Colo., dazed from a blow to the head. The 15-year-old freshman, a member her high school soccer team, had hit the ground moments earlier when an opponent directed her forehead toward an airborne ball, missed and struck Courtney directly in the temple. Pain rippled through Camden's head, but after a few moments, she staggered to her feet and kept playing. Later, she got slide-tackled again. No one knew it at the time, but the combination of hits in that game last spring amounted to a life-altering concussion. More

from The Portland Press Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sports medicine specialists have been diagnosing an increasing number of professional-type injuries in younger athletes. These might include overuse injuries like those that come from running 40 miles a week or from traumatic injuries never before seen in youngsters. Almost half of all sports injuries occur in kids under age 14, and they can be seen in those as young as 5. About a quarter of all concussions in children are the result of sports participation. Buffalo Bills Believe in Cold Therapy
from the Buffalo News    Share    Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It might not be much fun, but for the Buffalo Bills and players throughout the NFL, the cold tub is a virtual fountain of youth. At first glance, the tub looks innocent enough. About the size of its more well-known companion the hot tub, the cold tub provides no leisurely pleasure. As Bills' head athletic trainer Bud Carpenter puts it, a person would "need to have their head examined if they think that that's a fun activity." More

FDA to Revoke Knee-Device Approval
from The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Food and Drug Administration said it planned to revoke a medical-device company's right to sell a knee implant called Menaflex after an unprecedented yearlong review concluded the agency erred in allowing it on the market. The FDA's top device regulator, Jeffrey Shuren, called it an "unusual, unique" circumstance. The FDA sometimes removes devices when new safety data emerge, but it is rare for the agency to call the entire approval process flawed and redo the evaluation. More

Hope for Spinal Cord Patients
from Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
History was made this month when a patient in Atlanta was treated for the first time with a therapy derived from human embryonic stem cells. It was part of a clinical trial to test the safety of specialized nerve cells that researchers hope will repair damaged spinal cords — potentially allowing patients to regain the use of their legs, bladders or even just a single finger that would allow them to operate their own wheelchair. from USA TODAY    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Army says it has discovered a simple blood test that can diagnose mild traumatic brain damage or concussion, a hard-to-detect injury that can affect young athletes, infants with "shaken baby syndrome" and combat troops. Army Col. Dallas Hack, who has oversight of the research, says recent data show the blood test, which looks for unique proteins that spill into the blood stream from damaged brain cells, accurately diagnosing mild traumatic brain injury in 34 patients. from TIME    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The average American's smartphone may be pretty dumb about health, according to a new survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.
