Hip Procedure Grows Popular Despite Doubt
from The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It is one of the most popular operations in sports medicine. It comes in various forms, all with the same name: Hip impingement or bone shaving surgery. After 16-Year-Old Hockey Player Dies, Safety Debate Begins
from Yahoo Sports    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the NHL last season, 24 of its 30 teams blocked more than 550 shots during the 82-game regular season. It's become an essential facet of team defense at the pro level: Sacrificing the body, and one's own safety, to deflect a speeding puck, hoping that a player's equipment sufficiently protects them. Kyle Fundytus, 16, played defense for the Don Wheaton Midget AA team in Edmonton. Last weekend, he slid to the ice to block a slap-shot from an opponent, something his coach, Nathan Papirny, said he'd do with regularity. What happened next, according to Papirny, was a "once in a 10 million" accident that cost Fundytus his life. More

Former Football Players' Brains May Benefit From Healthy Lifestyle
from HealthDay News via U.S. News and World Report    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A healthy lifestyle may help reduce football players' risk of cognitive problems later in life, a new study suggests. Due to repeated head trauma, football players are more likely than athletes in non-contact sports and non-athletes to suffer cognitive problems as they age. In this study, researchers assessed former college football players and found that those who ate high-fat foods had greater difficulty with recalling information, orientation and engaging and applying ideas, compared to those who ate less fat and had healthier diets overall. In NHL, Disclosure of Concussions Is Lagging
from The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Concussions continued to cast a long shadow over the NHL. The league has earned praise this season for taking measures to reduce concussions, including introducing stronger rules against boarding and checks to the head, and strictly enforcing those rules through fines and suspensions. But questions persist about a league policy that allows teams to be vague about disclosure of injuries, and a recent incident suggested that in-game concussion protocols might be inconsistently applied.
