Mark your calendars! NJSME will continue offering continuing education credits for PEs at our general membership meetings in 2018. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 12.
We pride ourselves on offering low cost options and relevant topics for our membership. If you would like to recommend a topic or speaker for one of these meetings, please email Vice President Tim Staszewski with your suggestions. Further, to help subsidize our meeting costs, we rely on meeting sponsors who can participate in our meeting with a tabletop display and brief remarks for a relatively small contribution. Any potential sponsors should also be directed to Tim via the email above, or they can call NJSME at 609-393-0102.

Turner Construction's Second Quarter 2018 Turner Building Cost Index reflects a 5.63 percent increase in construction costs since the second quarter of 2017 and a quarter-over-quarter increase of 1.68 percent. The index, which, as of the second quarter, sits at a value of 1089, measures non-residential U.S. construction costs and, according to Turner, has been rising steadily since at least 2014 in the wake of increased building activity. More expensive raw materials and the labor shortage are both contributors to higher costs.

Skills shortages have been a major force behind cost escalation in U.S. construction. Acute demand means that New York construction workers command an average cost of labor of $98.30 per hour — the second highest in the world behind Zurich, Switzerland. What receives considerably less airtime than labor issues are the steps that the industry must take to mitigate the impact of shortages and the part it can play in attracting new talent to the industry.

Leaders are responsible for making sure the whole construction team has the confidence they need to do their job to the best of their ability. It is easy to underestimate how important autonomy is to retention and overall job satisfaction. If employees do not feel like they have the ability to set their own path, they frequently look for another job that gives them more freedom. By emphasizing job autonomy, leaders can build trust, improve innovation, eliminate confusion and increase job satisfaction.
