Aug. 11 is National Call Before You Dig Day, and Atlantic City Electric reminds all customers and contractors to call 811 to have utility-owned underground lines marked before digging. Every six minutes someone damages an underground utility line because of digging without first calling 811, according to the Common Ground Alliance, the national association promoting 811 and safe digging practices.

A band of surveyors recently went digging for history and direction and found it.
About 30 members of the Professional Surveyors Association of Nebraska discovered two monuments in central Nebraska that were buried in 1893. The surveyors spent their summer seminar focused on uncovering monuments along the southern 12 miles of the 24-mile-long boundary between Sherman and Howard counties.

While still dogged by major funding questions, the planning process for a proposed new trans-Hudson rail tunnel is moving forward this month with public review of the latest draft of the tunnel's alignment and its potential impact on the environment.
A series of public hearings on the proposed tunnel's draft environmental impact statement wrapped up. Federal and state officials are also collecting public comments on the tunnel, which would be built as part of the larger Gateway transportation project, through Aug. 21.

A federal judge in Pennsylvania says authorities can condemn and seize property in order to make way for the Atlantic Sunrise pipeline.
U.S. Eastern District Court Judge Jeffrey Schmehl has issued an order that gave Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Company the right to condemn and seize Jeffery and Kim Kahn's property in Conestoga Township. The company can now obtain temporary and permanent rights of way for the pipeline.
