NJSPLS creates awareness for the profession at the NJSCA fall conference
|
    |
By John Beattie, PLS, NJSPLS Vice President
On Friday, September 29th, NJSPLS members Carl Peters, Ambrose Gmeiner, John D. Beattie, James Heiser, and Adam Grant along with Executive Director Mark Husik and Dr. Laramie Potts of NJIT exhibited at the NJ School Counselor Association’s Fall Conference. This turned out to be a tremendous opportunity to increase the visibility of our organization and our profession. We met with hundreds of high school guidance counselors who were excited to hear about the diversity of opportunities in our field. Many have invited us to come and give presentations to their students about our profession. This will become an annual event as part of our continuing strategy to create awareness about the surveying profession and NJSPLS.

Do you have technicians in your firm who would like to become Certified Survey Technicians (CST)? This designation gives important and needed recognition to survey technicians, while providing objectives for improvement for field and office technicians.
NJSPLS is sponsoring the CST Examination for Levels 1, 2 and 3 on Saturday, October 21 at the Clarion in Toms River. The registration for this exam is a TWO-STEP process. You will need to register with NJSPLS (click here) and also register with NSPS by going to http://www.nsps.us.com and search for the CST application link that is located under the PROGRAMS header.
But don't delay, NSPS needs time to produce and send us the exams. Registration will close for this session on Friday, October 6.
Remember you need to sign up with both NJSPLS and NSPS.

More than 20 years before Hurricane Harvey, officials in suburban Houston were aware that a heavy storm could cause a reservoir to overflow and inundate nearby homes with water. So they issued a warning to potential home buyers.
But they put the warning in an obscure place: deep in the same public land records that list street dimensions and the layout of utilities in a subdivision.
Now many of the 3,000 suburban Houston homeowners who were flooded during Harvey question whether local officials did enough to caution them about the dangers of flooding from big rainstorms.

Construction DIVE
The construction industry and lawmakers alike are awaiting final details of President Donald Trump's $1 trillion infrastructure plan. The only specifics that have been publicized so far are that the administration wants to kick off the program with $200 billion of direct spending, which is intended to spur enough private investment to cover the remainder.

The transformational power of urbanism has captured the imagination of policymakers around the world in recent years. Yet too many planning departments still resort to old top-down ways of thinking — the modernist quest for the drive-in utopia. While former British colonies in Africa and Asia are struggling to break out of the blueprint, some cities in Latin America have been at the center of attention. The region has become something of an urbanism laboratory.
